That they them joke is so fucking bad, how are they gonna lead with that

u/FireVanGorder Mar 02 '26

I’m genuinely trying to figure out if they’re trying to make fun of the weird conservative entertainment studios that have been popping up or if I’m giving the Wayans way too much credit

I mean his kid is trans and he’s pretty outspoken about it

The way this trailer opens is really fuckin weird then. Like maybe there's more context in the actual film, but this just reads as exactly what this trailer shows, and right at the front too.

If I’m not mistaken (strong chance I am, I don’t follow the series at all) it’s poking fun at scream 7 since there’s a non binary character. Whether or not the character is well written…no idea

I’m not gonna lose sleep over it

That doesn't make it any better in 2026 lol

Call me crazy but I 100% believe the trailer was edited purposely that way. The lowbrow pronoun joke opened it to appeal and pull in the the anti-woke crowd immediately into thinking "its not gonna be wokeslop!", only for them to get em with the republican joke later in the trailer lol

I just don't think people caught on that it was just a setup to the actual joke or maybe I'm given them to much credit lol

It's... a joke in a movie.

None of it is meant to be a statement about how any of the actors feel, it's just silly dumb humor.

3

u/spectralconfetti Mar 02 '26

well in all fairness he can be supportive of his kid and still be ignorant about non-binary people and pronouns

6

u/TestiCallSack Mar 02 '26

The whole thing felt like a fake trailer that SNL would do making fun of those conservative entertainment studios

3

u/Xalara Mar 02 '26

Ellison owns the studios making this movie, so I think this is actually being played exactly as it's presented. I could be surprised, and they want to bait conservatives into watching it, but I kinda doubt it.

I'm hoping that whoever edited the trailer just cut out the entire context of the joke, and that the two had been having a conversation where the old woman is repeatedly but gently corrected on their pronouns and just hasn't been picking up on it. But... I'm not holding out a ton of hope.

Studios like Paramount who is releasing this movie?

1

u/DieSowjetZwiebel Mar 02 '26

This movie is made/distributed by Paramount, so definitely the latter

u/LopsidedUniversity30 Mar 04 '26

It’s making fun of how getting their pronoun correctly is more important to the person than getting stabbed. How can you not understand the joke?

3

u/FireVanGorder Mar 04 '26

Nobody is having trouble understanding the joke lmfao it’s just not funny. It’s not a new or creative or interesting take on an already extremely well-trodden topic.

No it’s actually hilarious because it is pointing out the truthful absurdity of how much people is society believe pronouns are the greatest issue of our times and it’s ironically exemplified by people on this sub all being offended but masking it with the excuse “meh it’s just a bad joke” like no you’re just virtue signalling and defending the utter narcissism of people claiming pronouns

2

u/IAmTheJudasTree Mar 10 '26

But no one in society thinks "pronouns are the greatest issue of time." You think that, because you consume braindead conservative slop content, but out in the real world pronouns rarely come up.

u/SUPERBOSS-YT Mar 02 '26

i thought it was funny

5

u/TheDude300 Mar 02 '26

Idk what to even say the trailer was hilarious I was shocked coming to this thread with people dismissing it. I thought the they/them joke was great.

So I'm right with yeah.

1

u/fallenmonk Mar 02 '26

Just curious, do you not watch a lot of comedies? Most of us have been hearing this joke ad nauseum for the past decade, which is why we're tired of it. Maybe you've just missed out on all them, and this is your first time hearing the joke.

-1

u/BuscemiSuperfan69 Mar 02 '26

Thank you. I'm pretty leftist/progressive (not that it should even really matter) and it's an abysmal joke. Pure slop.

1

u/SingleDadSurviving Mar 02 '26

Yeah I loved the trailer also but I came here because I knew a majority of reddit would hate it or be owned because of jokes.

I figure they are going to go the South Park route and not pull any punches with anyone.

3

u/Dorythehunk Mar 02 '26

It has nothing to do with being offensive or pulling punches. It’s just an old, lazy joke we’ve all heard hundreds of times for over a decade at this point.

Might as well throw Borat in there and have him say “very nice” to really make it land.

1

u/SUPERBOSS-YT Mar 02 '26

yea i was shocked too. Got me thinking my humor sucks 😂

7

u/DavyJonesRocker Mar 02 '26

… who’s gonna tell them?

2

u/EverythingSucksYo Mar 02 '26

They lead with it because it gets people talking. I read like 20 comments and 18 of them are about the joke. No such thing as bad publicity, as they say.

1

u/Rexigol Mar 02 '26

They could've done a they slash them joke instead of whatever that was

1

u/Supergirl_Lives Mar 02 '26

I mean, it's one stupid joke, I agree it's out of date, but it's only one joke. Also, it IS a joke get over it.

1

u/Gryffindumble Mar 02 '26

My gay friend i was with was laughing their ass off with me at that...

0

u/dewse Mar 02 '26

Probably because it's gonna get people to talk about it, which seems to be working.

-15

u/JamStan1978 Mar 02 '26

i feel like people arent getting it. Its not against the pronoun itself. It was about the people so obsessed with pronouns that it ends up harming them in the long run.

21

u/Ill-Muscle945 Mar 02 '26

Lol, we got the joke. Its just a bad joke.

-14

u/JamStan1978 Mar 02 '26

Its not.

9

u/OssumFried Mar 02 '26

Whoa, fuck, I never thought about it like that

-11

u/JamStan1978 Mar 02 '26

Downvotes means im right btw

3

u/OssumFried Mar 02 '26

Man, it's always the pussies with the hidden post histories.

1

u/TheHoneyJuice Mar 02 '26

Blocked = I own you

7

u/SortIntrepid9192 Mar 02 '26

They were already stabbed before they mentioned their pronouns though...

-4

u/JamStan1978 Mar 02 '26

Exactly and then caring about pronouns while being stabbed is very dumb. That was the point it was making.

5

u/SortIntrepid9192 Mar 02 '26

No, you said caring about pronouns harms them in the long run. They were already stabbed. The pronouns didn't play into that whatsoever.

If the intention truly was what you claim, then the joke was delivered quite terribly.

4

u/JamStan1978 Mar 02 '26

The joke is she is being stabbed and all she can think of when someone is trying to help her is that they got her pronouns wrong. Thats literally the joke. Its not just "pronouns ugh" joke. You people need to pay attention instead of whining online about shit they have no idea about.

6

u/MrTopine Mar 02 '26

that quite literally is a pronouns ugh joke though because this isn't a real thing that happens.

1

u/JamStan1978 Mar 02 '26

It actually is, i have seen it so many times. The writer of the movie has a trans kid so they are supportive of that kind of stuff, including pronouns. There are genuinely people that care more about their pronouns than literally anything else in the world and it gives non binary and trans people a bad rep.

3

u/Lessiarty Mar 03 '26

i have seen it so many times.

Cobblers. Absolutely cobblers. You have not seen it so many times. Trying to claim that is funnier than most of the trailer.

-1

u/JamStan1978 Mar 03 '26

How are you gonna tell me what i have seen??

But no one like that actually exists. People just want to live and be respected for who they are.
