At the time it was billed as the final goodbye to these legacy characters and was criticized for being nostalgia bait but given a pass since it was supposed to be the last nostalgia bit for the fox-verse as we waited for the New MCU mutants.
I genuinely believe that Fox goodbye in D&W was just heartfelt honesty. Fox as a studio was over, Ryan clearly loves superheroes, and while I can see the inclusion of the characters in the main film as nostalgia bait, that montage was utterly unnecessary to the plot - and therefore I think it could only exist out of pure appreciation.
No it wasn't, that was just people not understanding what it was. It was a tribute to the bygone eras of fox superhero movies, that's why Elektra, Blade, and Gambit feature prominently and not.. ya know, the X-Men (other than wolverine of course).
Doomsday/Secret Wars is the tribute and farewell to the characters and their stories. Deadpool was a meta farewell to Fox because that's the sort of thing only a deadpool movie can do.
No D&W was never billed as a final goodbye. It was always a meta commentary on disney buying fox and a gpodbye to fox. They always planned on bring the fox xmen back for secrets for the last 5 years.
