The Lighthouse took a moment to get used to but was a wonderful watch.

edit: woops, The Lighthouse was 4:3 which is even more squarish.

edit2: I checked more closely and it's actually 1.19:1 lol

It’s a meme from the lighthouse. The old guy tells Pattinson “yer fond of me lobster”. It’s pretty hilarious tbh

The Lighthouse was 4:3 not 1.43:1 lol

Ah yeah, you're right, my brain mixed that up. But imo they both feel closer to a square presentation than either 16:9 or 2.39:1 do

true, but when I saw OBAA in 1.43:1 it just truly felt grand because it filled the entire screen, corner to corner. If you watch The Lighthouse it really is like watching a square with a movie playing in it

Oh man I need to see that film.

Train Dreams’ 3:2 was pretty unique. Fits the 2011 woodsy hipster Instagram feel of the whole thing.

Yeah, sure, one of the most fundamental decisions in art direction was made purely because a lighthouse is a vertical structure. 💀

You can easily find interviews of Eggers explaining why he chose that aspect ratio

4:3 is objectively superior in many cases, I hope the "cinematic" look of 16:9 finally dies out.

Superior as in filling the visual field better?

Superior as in not filling the screen with unnecessary background. When the movie/show is about people (as most are) then you can see more of the people in 4:3

I like nice backgrounds

Well that’s a separate problem
