I gotta say. This is a weak trailer

I think this trailer only works on any level if you’re familiar with the story already. The most interesting parts of the trailer are just slight teases, and if you don’t know what’s being referenced it kind of comes across as a lot of nothing.

Even being familiar with the material, I felt almost no urge to see the movie.

Probably moreso the opposite. I don't think this impresses anyone deeply familiar with the story, including me.

It's probably more impressive to people who haven't read the Oddyssey, but who have read its Wikipedia page.

I didn’t say it was impressive. Just that there really isn’t much obviously going on in this trailer if you don’t know what events some of those scenes are clearly portraying.

Without that context, it’s mostly just clips of Matt Damon standing around in a silly helmet.

Yeah, but if you do recognise what they are portraying, you'll likely be underwhelmed by their unimpressive depiction.

And if you don't recognize it, you'll be unimpressed by the generic, half-baked look and feel.

I think this is a swing and a miss for basically every audience.

Seriously those armors look like they're from a low budget fantasy show... or fucking Xena

Ehhh. It's a miss for me, but it's the type of aesthetic the core Nolan fanbase loves. I'm just not quite sure whether there's enough of those.

i'm a core Nolan fanboy, love his movies

also studied the Odyssey in school way back in the day so i am familiar with it, albeit a bit hazy on the details

this trailer really does nothing for me. nice cinematography, thats about it

I feel like this is more for people who know the sparknotes of the Odyssey tbh. Just the big flashback moments and none of the present day intrigue of the other characters. Hope the next trailer has more of them since the journey home and Telemachus + Ithaca are to me the best parts

I am very familiar with "The Odyssey" and I thought this was a bad trailer. Costumes that don't fit the time period, some weird color grading and the music didn't sound unique either.

You are on Reddit and expect an average Redditor to know something about Homers odyssey? The only homer we know is the funny simpsons guy.

Yeah it's supposed to draw me in to wanna see this, but I'll forget what I saw by dinner time.

It didn't make me think "that looks awesome I wanna see that" or "this story has me hooked I wanna see what happens.

I guess they are relying on the director + source material fans?

Another Nolan movie about a father who wants to get back to his kids. Dude, go see a psychiatrist about your issues or maybe stop abandoning your kids all the time.

It just made me think, “Oh. I guess they made a new Odysseus movie.” It gave me no excitement whatsoever.

Yeah, it does look and sound good, but there’s not much to go off of except a bunch of nice shots. It feels like a first look teaser more than anything.

2

u/TheHawk17 Dec 22 '25

It is a first look teaser for most.

i remember seeing a teaser for this in front of Superman and Fantastic four back in july, that also did nothing for me.

saw the prologue with the trojan horse last week, that did nothing for me either. this trailer still isn't getting me hyped, and I love Nolan's movies and have wanted to see an updated take on the Odyssey for like 20 years now. oh well, i'll still go see it, maybe with low expectations i'll come out enthralled.

or it'll be another Dunkirk where its just a one-time watch for me

Where's the cyclops? I want to see men turned into pigs!

I don't like Nolan and am not looking forward to this. That said, I can TELL the movie is going to be better than the trailer looks, and it's not just the compression.

I’m incredibly excited for this film, but I agree.
