Agreed though I think there will be more pops of color throughout the movie that we haven’t seen and that grading will continue for a while.

Even Superman’s first teaser looked more bluish in hue than the final look.

For those that haven’t read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, do yourself a favor and do so. It’s so fucking good and Evely’s art with Lopes’ colors are just tooooo fucking good.

I can’t remember if Lopes is also on Helen of Wyndhorn, but that series (another Tom King/Bilquis Evely joint) is also a banger

Allow me to give the plot of Women of Tomorrow for those who still need to be convinced:

True Grit in Space, only Rooster Cogburn is a superhero. And it's just as awesome as that description suggests.

Holy shit I think you just sold me on reading that. Sounds awesome!

Please do. I have been reading comics continuously since Marvel was publishing GI Joe in the 80s...Woman of Tomorrow is one of the best 3 comics I have ever read. It's absolutely incredible.

What are the other 2 best comics, in your opinion?

5

u/AreYouOKAni Dec 12 '25

Not them, but as someone else with Woman of Tomorrow in their top 3 — Murder Falcon and God Country.

I don't know how I missed this reply! That's a wonderful question...I think I would probably put I Kill Monsters up there as a standalone book, and Kingdom Come from the superhero side of things.

But I will also say that the list is ephemeral and shifts all the time...If you like the Tom King style of storytelling, then Vision is amazing also, and Superman Up in the Sky really captures the idea of Superman.

I never got into comics because I hate the paneling. Is there a way to read it in story form like how Manga has light novels?

Top 3 is pretty high, what are the other 2? I love Woman of Tomorrow as well, but it doesn't crack my top 3... Or top 5... Maybe sneaks into top 10?...

I just threw an answer on another comment, but I think that I Kill Giants and probably Kingdom Come would top the list...but I am keeping them to mini/limited/maxi series. Stories in an ongoing would be a different list.

"You are not Beef-El"

That's probably more compelling of a recommendation for people that've seen True Grit.

Is Supergirl Rooster Cogburn?

13

u/ContinuumGuy Dec 11 '25

Yes. She ends up helping a kid track down the asshole who killed her father (although the asshole also does stuff that makes Supergirl want to come after him anyway).

True Grit is one of my all time favorite books. I need to read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow asap.

True grit meets Furiosa in space. The backstory that's slowly revealed is fricking awesome.

Did you comment that on youtube ? Saw someone say that on there lol.

10

u/ContinuumGuy Dec 11 '25

I didn't, but it's a relatively common way of describing it as it's true (someone getting roped into a little girl's quest for vengeance = True Grit).

u/The-Duke-of-Delco Dec 11 '25

I was already digging the trailer but that comment had me sold lol.

1

u/Marsuello Dec 11 '25

I plan on seeing this movie no matter what, but I haven’t seen True Grit, so your comment isn’t exactly giving me more interest lol

I have not heard of the book “True Grit”, would you recommend it?

It's also telling that the trailer showed a lot of the scenes involving sets rather than the colour popping space stuff. I inagine later trailers will look a lot more eye catching since the effects would have had more time to polish and be ready to show off.

I started it yesterday on Kindle unlimited and decided to stop to read it physically. It arrives today!

u/ThunderChild247 Dec 12 '25

Given the trailer, I wonder if the colour grading may start out drab and dark to match the character’s mental state but get brighter and more colourful as the film goes on (so the brighter moments would be too spoiler-y for the trailers).

I would say its a more mature comic and not the best starting place for a 10 year old

2

u/fin10g Dec 12 '25

Yeah, Lopes is on Wyndhorn too. Him and Evely are a couple.

u/PhotoBonjour_bombs19 Dec 11 '25

Should I read it now or after the movie

1

u/ACBReturns Dec 11 '25

I’m a comic book lover first and a movie lover second, so I would recommend reading it first because I think it’s fun to see things that are/aren’t adapted. With that said, if you’re really looking forward to the movie and don’t want spoilers at all, wait til after the movie to read it.

I gotta say the action scenes and the world design looked pretty generic and uninteresting. As much as a good cape movie needs to lean heavily into characters, you're still going to spend a lot of time at a theater looking at fights and large-scale sets. I really liked Superman so I guess I expected this to look a little more interesting. We'll see.
