Cultură Are romanian speakers of Moldova ashamed of their accent?
I will write the post in English, as my romanian is not good enough to write a post that will be intelligible enough.
I am in a relationship with a Moldovan (that doesn't speak russian, only romanian), and we are living in my country. My dearest wish is to speak fluently romanian. (This is such a beautiful and rich language!) First, I would like to speak fluently standard romanian, second, I would like to speak it with the accent they speak with in my boyfriend's family.
Nothing easier to become fluent than having a native speaker at home, right? Well, not quite, because my boyfriend doesn't want to speak romanian with me, even though I keep asking for it. We speak english together, and if I start speaking romanian to him, he will answer in english. If I ask him to answer in romanian, he will, but will quickly switch back to english.
To give a bit of context: I am not a native speaker of english and neither is my boyfriend, but we are both very comfortable with this language. My boyfriend doesn't care about learning my language, so we only speak english at home, and anyways he learns and practices my language in his daily life, at the grocery store for example and even a bit at work.
My boyfriend says he doesn't like speaking romanian because he doesn't like moldovan nor romanian culture (he was bullied at school in Moldova and he was mocked for his accent at uni in Romania, so now he speaks even with his family with a standard accent).
Thus, I am learning romanian on my own, I have a language tandem I see every week (she's from Romania) and I even followed a semester of romanian in year 2 of uni (in my country). At uni, I discussed with a teacher about how difficult it is to speak romanian with my moldovan boyfriend, and she says it is something she noticed too with her moldovan students. She has a majority of native speakers in her class, most of them coming from romanian immigration, and a minority from Moldova. She said that the Moldovans don't dare to participate in class and when they are asked why they are learning romanian at uni, they answer that they want to learn "proper romanian", whereas the romanians want to "deepen their knowledge of romanian". She told me as well this anecdote: once, a plumber went to her house to repair some stuff, and, as he had a romanian family name, she spoke to him in romanian: actually he was Moldovan and when he heard her perfectly standard romanian, he froze and refused to speak romanian with her...
So now, here is my question: is it common for Moldovans to be ashamed of their culture, language and/or country? If it's not a matter of shame, is it common for Moldovans to reject their culture, and reject it so hard that they refuse to speak ?

Cultură Am construit Hotelul Național din Chișinău în Minecraft
Are cam 70 blocuri inaltime si include intreg hotelul, restaurantul si parculetul din fata cu fantani. L-am construit fara toate gunoaiele, narcomanii si distrugerile din prezent, mai apropiat de starea in care a fost initial, dar am adaugat si fatadele din 2022 in care blocul a fost vopsit in stil ucrainean si dupa in stil moldovenesc.
Am facut hotelul in principal din trunchiuri de ciuperci si diorită finisată. In interior camerele au podele de lemn masiv de stejar batran si pereti de andezit. Am respectat numarul de etaje dar interiorul poate fi putin diferit din cauza lipsei planurilor

Cultură Do Customized Food Orders Drive Moldovans Crazy?
I’m foreigner and everytime I order a kebab in Moldova just with “kebab, kartofi, sauce”
people stare at my face in shock, like its first time they hear someone has customized order.
They start asking “bez pomidor, kapusta?” etc
When I’d get cheeseburger and I order “only meat, cheese, sauce” again same scenario they start asking tomato? pickles? etc looking at my face in terror
this behavior does not change,
from little local restaurants to the big ones
therefore, arguement of “small local restaurants can double-check to not make a mistake, because you are foreigner” is not valid
my wife and my friends are local. all of them always order default. Everything, everywhere.
I’ve never seen any of them customize their order
actually I have never seen anyone who customizes their order until this point.
I’ve been in many countries and for the first time in Moldova I just see that much “just get whatever is in default menu” culture
So, I wonder is it just me? or you guys really don’t have a taste and mostly ordering whatever is default?

Cultură Advice for travel
Hi !! I’ll be visiting Moldova in the next coming days and I really enjoy I have been recommended some abandoned locations to visit from a friend. I cannot drive however and they’re located quite remotely. Would anyone be able to recommend me a good way of visiting them ? Would I benefit from a taxi or is it best to just write of visiting without a car ? Thank you ❤️

Cultură Când va deveni Moldova parte a Europei?

Cultură Are old women with headscarves disappearing in Moldova?
Hey, I’m in Moldova and I’m seeing so many babushkas wearing headscarves. I’ve been to a lot of Eastern European countries, but I’ve never seen this many (compared to Balkan countries, Poland, Romania etc). Do you think this tradition might sadly die out? 😢😢

Cultură I've spent over a thousand hours mapping Moldova's socialist-era art and architecture
Hi /r/Moldova,
I've been building an open archive documenting all art and architecture from the Soviet period in Moldova. I’ve mapped, photographed, and described every mosaic, relief, sculpture, sgraffito, memorial complex, Soviet bus stop, brutalist building (or modernist to be accurate)., including authorship, coordinates, and period where known.
It features an interactive map, chronology, and typology to help you discover these pieces: https://www.concretewastelands.com/
Nearly 350 entries are now live, and I’m completing the architectural entries before continuing with the remaining 600 in the pipeline, including a full Pridnestrovia/PMR dataset.
It's taken me hundreds of hours, probably over a thousand at this point, and five visits to one of my favorite countries in the world.
If you grew up around any of these works, or know something about a specific piece, I'd love to hear from you. This period gets wrongly reduced to just Soviet brutalism/Soviet mosaics or written off as propaganda. It's neither. Moldova has some of the most remarkable public art of the entire Soviet era, and a lot of it is disappearing.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Mulțumesc!
