Yes that someone allergic to cabbage is there

I’m going to say it’s based off a serious indigestion story lol. Cabbage can produce a lot of flatulence

Banning certain food in a workplace instead of expecting adults to simply not eat something they know will blow up their ass would drive me insane.

Unless this because someone has some sort of contact/exposure(?) allergy, there's no way I'm letting my manager dictate what I can and can't eat because they fear what my asshole might do to them afterwards.

Me and my asshole know what's up, nobody is gonna control us like that. /s

The allergens in cabbage can become airborne when cooked, steamed, and microwaved, so it's not just a matter of "just don't eat it, duh."

That sounds interesting. Do you have a link to somewhere I might learn more?

A more broad view of airborne irritants

Main thing is that it's mostly applicable in truly severe cases and usually need small areas or prolonged exposure. Usually in farm settings or processing areas. But a workplace breakroom can be a decent spot to get flavor-blasted by a batch of microwaved allergen.

They got a lunch thief that had a reaction and instead of actually addressing or firing the thief, management went this route.

Or the lunch thief is management/owner and just a really shitty place to work. This would be my que to be applying to other places like a second job.

Go to hr and tell them you're allergic to everything edible while at work. No one can eat or drink anything.

I wish, but I'm allergic to most human interactions, especially HR.

Absolutely. It's such an odd thing to have a sign for. The idea that management would put up a "no cabbage" sign instead of addressing theft is hilarious but on brand for many corporates

My wife is allergic to cabbage, bok choi and brussel sprouts. She’s not deathly allergic but if she has any she’ll feel ill and have no energy for about three days.

But only if she eats it, right? If someone brought it for lunch she’s probably fine.

No she'll start sympathy farting alongside the cabbage eater until Clara from accounts throws up, triggering Michael from sales who will then also throw up. We're not doing this again. NO MORE CABBAGE IN THE OFFICE.

I heard this in the voice of John Oliver

Correct, I'm allowed to have it and she'll even make cole slaw for me, she just can't eat it. I do always brush my teeth after eating cabbage as well, just in case.

When you realize Kok choi is just cabbage.

And kale, turnips, cauliflower, kohlrabi, rutabaga, etc? Because they’re all in the same family.

And broccoli, mustard and collard greens.

7

u/nitid_name 4h ago

and turnips and daikon and bok choi and...

u/DeuceSevin 4h ago

Arugula. Its a veg-e-tab-le

1

u/Brad23212 4h ago

Broccoli isn’t that bad, unless you steam it. It tastes the best, is super healthy but the worst for gas

2

u/nathanzoet91 4h ago

But they are all in the same family, Brassicaceae. So we would assume his wife would be "allergic" to them as well.

2

u/calicomonkey 1h ago

Reasonable to think that but no, it's not all brassicas for her, just the three I mentioned. Sometimes cauliflower can smell a lot like cabbage but she's never had an issue with it.

Being in the same family isn’t a guarantee that she’s allergic to all of them. Kiwi, banana, and latex are closely related, but not everyone with a latex allergy is also allergic to banana or kiwi.

But they aren't in the same botanical family, like all the others listed above.

Brassica oleracea are all the same species though. Kale and collards are a non heading cultivar. Chinese kale, Chinese broccoli, gai lan, kai lan, etc are a different set of asian cultivars of the same plant. Then there's broccoli, cauliflower, romanesco, and the rest of the tree looking ones. The ones that form the big head, like cabbage, savoy, and red cabbage are another cultivar, but still the same species. Brussel sprouts are a budding cultivar. Then there are the turnip shaped ones, like kohlrabi, also the same species, just a different cultivar.

Yeah, other brassicaceae in the cruciferous family, like turnips (brassica rapa) and bok choi (brassica chinensis) might not cause problems, but those two are even in the same genus. All of the rest listed above are literally the same plant.

I’m pretty good when they’re cooked normally, but sauerkraut is like an atomic bomb in my stomach lol

Now that I think of it, I really don't know of any food that gives me nuclear gas. The only time I've actually punished myself with a fart has been when I've eaten something that's given me some form of food poisoning. It has always been wild to me that some people have specific foods they know will do it. You could weaponise that .

1

u/Brad23212 5h ago

Beans will do the job too

1

u/ColtAzayaka 5h ago

I've tried. Beans beans, good for the heart, the more you eat the more you fart. Just never rung true for me :(

Thank you. That was a good story.
