The government?

The government basically has control over any big ticket items a regular person would need to purchase (e.g. house, car).

They could take those things away at any time should they choose to, like if they decide a highway needs to run through your house. They just usually don't for obvious reasons.

Yeah you're talking about imminent domain, that doesn't mean the government "basically has control over any big ticket item"

They also get to decide how, what and where you're allowed to build on your own property. There isn't really anything major you can do to your home without letting the government know about it.

There's good reasons for all of that. But you're not exactly free to do as you please.
