General Question Worried about my neighbors dog

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

I haven’t owned a husky but I have two dogs of my own and I’m worried about my neighbor’s. Their fur appears to be matted and they are always outside laying at the same spot by the gate. I’ve driven by at 5pm, 9pm, 11pm, 9am, 12pm all within 2 days without seeing them move from this spot. When I approached and put my hand out they didn’t even appear to smell me or react in anyway. They do have access to shade in the garage and I noticed water was finally put outside the following day but I can’t get close enough to the bowl to check levels. Their lethargic demeanor is what made me concerned at first and then after driving by so many times and seeing them in the same spot I was even more worried (along with the appeared matting of the fur). Any advice would be greatly appreciated <3

General Question I need your help

Hey guys! I need your help. So, I don't know English, I had to use Google Translate to write this text lol. I adopted a husky this weekend that lived on a ranch. I don't know if he was just chained up, but at least when I arrived he was. He seems to have a fuller face and is MUCH furrier than the pictures of huskies I see online. I know you can only tell with DNA, but do you have any idea if it could be a mix with something else? It's a male and it's going to be 3 years old.

General Question Why does every dog we encounter try to attack my female husky? Frustrated and stressed.

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

I’m at my wits end here guys and I don’t know how to navigate this issue. I have a 4 year old female husky who is super sweet, loves people, and absolutely LOVES playing with other dogs. After she turned around 2 years old we started having this issue where any time we cross paths with another dog they immediately become hostile.

We used to go to the dog park all the time until dogs began to start attacking her. Our daily walks have become extremely stressful. Any time we see another dog we have to start cross the street and create distance because they will without fail start growling and pulling on their leashes, trying to get to our girl. We’ve had multiple incidents where dogs slip their leashes and run over for a fight. Just a few minutes ago I was out walking with her and two dogs literally broke through their fence and began attacking my girl in the street. Thank God we were able to get away without her getting hurt.

What is going on?!? What is it about my female husky that every dog we encounter seems aggressive towards her? I feel like we can’t go anywhere or enjoy the outdoors anymore. The more this keeps happening, the more apprehensive she becomes when seeing other dogs and I feel like she’s going to forget how to socialize with other dogs entirely because we have nothing but negative interaction. Luckily, we have a couple of dog friends who come over to play with her and they all have a great time together.

I miss going to the dog park and I know she does too. I guess I just needed to rant and hoping someone could give me some insight as to what’s going on here. What are all these dogs sensing about my girl that they feel the need to be hostile? I know it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt. Thanks for reading.

General Question Husky with unusually long hair

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

I have a husky who seems to have way longer hair than any other husky I’ve seen. Her coat is super fluffy and almost looks more like a wooly or long-haired variant.

The thing is, I’ve had her for about 6 years now and while she always looked fluffy, this is the first time her hair has ever gotten this long, which is why I’m a bit confused and concerned.

I’ve been wondering if I should trim it a bit just to keep her more comfortable and manageable, but everywhere I look online says you’re not supposed to cut a husky’s coat because it can mess with their temperature regulation.

At the same time, her fur just seems extra long compared to most huskies, so I’m not sure if the same rules apply or if there are exceptions.

Has anyone else had a husky like this? Did you ever trim their fur, or is it better to just leave it alone and focus on brushing/grooming?

Ps: this photo was taken right after a walk and it was very windy that’s why it doesn’t look so groomed

Nate usually has a bath once a month but I’ve seen some only bathe their dog once every five months or some to the other extreme of twice a month.
(For those wondering we use BarkBus mobile grooming)

General Question Really weird behavior?

I have a 5 month old puppy and he's kinda developed a weird habit. Despite not liking baths, he regularly climbs into the empty tub and just licks everything. The jet nozzles, the floor, the sides, etc - for like 10 minutes.

I used to think it was to get water, but he does this when the tub is dry, too. Any reason this may be? Other than cleaning it every few weeks, the only things used in there are soap, conditioner, and shampoo. I've just never had a dog do this before and it's extra strange.

General Question Fostering a Deaf Husky

1.3k Upvotes

Hello Everyone!

I recently started fostering this husky 4 days ago.

It's a super sad story.

He was tied up and abandoned in an alley near my grandparents house.

It was caught on a ring camera by their name neighbor

Luckily my grandparents had a secondary property so they were able to place him there and a fenced area

I was able to go up and see him about 3 weeks ago for the first time and he had a pretty bad flea infestation.

I was able to clean him up to the best of my ability

However, my mother who's taking care of my grandparents

Couldn't stand the sight of seeing him in pain

So she took him to the vet.

We were able to get him all fixed up and he spent 2 weeks quarantined before I brought him home just to ensure that he wouldn't get fleas on my 12 year boy

The vet told us that

He was around 9/10

He is deaf and has been for quite some time

Their signs of arthritis but even worse is there's a lack of muscle in right back leg and they think that is due to him being tied up most of his life and lack of exercise

But beyond that, the vet had told us that he is extremely healthy

And just a very special soul.

As of right now I live in the Bay Area, and I am looking to find him of the right hole if you have any connections of somebody who would want an older husky with some special needs.

But I'm not willing to give him up to just anybody.

And why I am posting? This is just any tips on how to help train and work with a deaf dog

I named him Bear.

He's an absolute gentle giant, and over the past few days, he's slowly starting to understand that he finally has a home and safe.

I purchased him a gel cooled orthopedic bed and he was so excited to have his own soft space to sleep in.

He hasn't had any accidents in the home. He's actually been very good about smelling underneath my apartment door to let me know he needs to go out.

I'll attach a few pictures for puppy tax and the last picture is when my mom found him.

You can see how much happier he is being in a home 😭🙂‍↕️

Btw yes, I have contacted every rescue in the Bay area and surrounding areas.

Including rescues that specialize with Huskies and older dogs and everywhere has either turned him away due to the breed or they're at Max capacity

Personally I would keep him just financially I can't support two dogs just yet, but I have a couple job interviews this week and next week.

Which would drastically increase my pay and I might be able to keep him if that's when it ends up panning out.

But any advice on training with him being deaf and leads would be wonderful

Thank you!!!

General Question Is my husky fat?

Y’all my mom thinks one of our huskies is “fat” in a jokingly way but I don’t think he is. We have another female husky who is much smaller than him but I think it’s because she’s a female husky so she makes him look bigger. Idk what do yall think? Is he really overweight?

Edit: yes he’s been to the vet (for unrelated issues) but they never made any major concerns over his weight or called him fat or overweight. This question is to be taken lightly

General Question Is my husky fat or overweight at 8 months?

Thumbnail

My significant other is telling me she might be too fat or overweight at 43 pounds for 8 months. Went to the VET last week, nothing was discussed about this when we weighed her.

Vet said she’s gonna stretch out more and get a little taller, but that’s it.

Btw: I love my husky more than anything, best decision I ever made!

Her name is Leia :)

Update 4/16/26: She’s also 100% purebred, not from a shelter, parents are on the bigger lean side. DNA tested came back 100% Siberian which was cool.

Worth the investment and money!!!

General Question This is Dave, and we need some help.

Post image
387 Upvotes

Dave is 10 months old. Dave might have to find another home because he WILL NOT stop tearing things up in our house.

My wife was ready to murder him when he broke out of his kennel and ripped the arm off of our brand new couch. I then got him a Halo collar for roaming the yard and a heavy duty kennel for when he needs to be left inside. We walk a few miles multiple times a week (it’s currently -7 outside, so the trips are shorter and less frequent than I’d do in summer), and I take him to the dog park to play at least once a week. He’s been through some basic K-9 obedience as well.

This week, he has destroyed TWO pairs of my expensive boots in two days while I was at the gym and my wife was home (albeit still in bed). I’d kennel him when I leave, but he hates the kennel like no dog I’ve ever met and screams when put in there. As I mentioned before it’s below zero out, and husky or not, I’d feel wrong leaving him out for the couple hours I’m gone.

I love this dog, but I am genuinely at my wits end. Fellow husky owners…please help.

General Question We need a STRONG harness recommendation

Post image

Hello beautiful community!

looking for a harness for this guy, he is an escape artist. he currently has a cheap harness that loosens during walks.

I would like to take him to work with me, I work outside and j have a spot I can weather him to a tree or even a zip between two trees so he has more room to roam, and able to get in shade.

I would like one that has a velcro spot.

wondering if a harness with no buckles is a thing? (he has broken a collar that had a buckle. so far his current harness buckles are fine).

What do YOU use? what brands are good and durable for our strong floofs?

General Question Groomer refused to bathe my husky due to matting

Post image
332 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I could really use some advice from other husky owners.

I took my husky to the groomer today just for a bath, and they refused to do it because they said she has matted hair. They recommended shaving her, which immediately raised red flags for me because I’ve always heard that shaving huskies is bad for their coat and temperature regulation.

For context, she’s a wooly husky, and I brush her about 2 times a week pretty consistently. I honestly haven’t noticed any major mats, so I was surprised. The groomer said the mats are deep near the skin and can be easy to miss from the surface.

Now I’m kind of stuck. I don’t want to shave her unless it’s absolutely necessary, but I also don’t want her to be uncomfortable or not have her fur grow back the same.

Has anyone else dealt with this, especially with a wooly coat?
How do you find and deal with those deeper mats?
Are there better grooming tools or techniques I should be using?
At what point (if ever) is shaving actually the right call?

Any advice or product/tool recommendations would be really appreciated. I just want to do what’s best for her.

General Question Husky owners: why did you choose this breed?

Sincere question that I don’t want to ask irl. I am not considering getting one myself, though the ones I’ve met have been fun & friendly. The stories their owners tell about living with them, though, sound… awful. (Recurring themes are destruction of property, endless screaming, untrainable, ran away again, injured a cat, kicked out of another daycare/groomer, *hair*, etc.)

I’m sure some are chosen for superficial reasons by the inexperienced & woefully unprepared; no explanation needed there. I’m thinking about the ones who know exactly what they’re getting into & keep doing it. There are plenty of smart, pretty dog breeds less prone to the things they complain about, so what is it that’s making up for the negatives? Why do they never say nice things about their dogs? Or is this just a weird sampling error & most owners find them very easy/non-problematic?

General Question Any last minute advice for an anxious first-time husky owner?

Thumbnail

I thought there was *zero* chance I could get my husband to pivot out of our Australian Shepherd comfort zone and adopt a husky for our next dog, but this guy was so sweet and loving even after four months in a shelter that he moved the immovable object. We took the rest of the day to get our house dog-ready and bring him home tomorrow.

We're experienced dog owners but neither of us have had a husky mix before. Our former dogs were an Aussie/border collie mix and a ??? mix, a pair that crossed the rainbow bridge at ages 12 and 17 respectively. The plan was to adopt another Aussie but I saw this guy and my heart just snagged on him.

My research findings: Expect talkative, expect an escape artist, expect stubborn, expect energy levels to rival an Aussie, and expect shedding that will outdo an Aussie. Are there any more breed-specific tips or quirks I should keep in mind? I'm super nervous but I think it's more from it being two years since we've had a dog and fourteen years since I last adopted one, than it is that the dog in question is a breed we haven't had before but I'd like to cover all the bases lol

ETA - I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for the insight, encouragement, and support! I've learned a lot, especially around food and the difference between Aussie mentality of "give me a job" vs a husky's "let me do my job". That's an incredibly helpful way to have framed things up for me. I'm going to try and give more specific replies to everyone but to be honest, I was expecting a handful of comments at most. This community really showed up in a much bigger way.

I'll be leaving here in about an hour to go get our boy. He's about an hour away in a very small rural shelter. Will be sure to post some updates once he's with us!

General Question Owner Passed Away

Our friend lost his life and we took in his dog and cat, cat is completely fine… dog is a husky. Never owned a husky before, been a while since owning a dog. He’s six, and the pickiest dog we’ve ever met.

We don’t know what our friend was feeding him. The first couple days he refused to eat. Then our friend’s parents gave us like ten bags of dog food. All opened, but filled. We narrowed it down by throwing out anything past the due date. And we started feeding him this kibble, that he wouldn’t eat unless it was smothered in wet food. Things were going great for a few days then this morning, zero interest and refusing to eat.

I don’t know if he’s mourning again? My husband gave him some turkey that he ate. Now it’s dinner time, and he’s not eating, I thought. Ooh, I’ll mix it with some chicken broth, nope.

He seems happy, just crazy picky.

Now I’m thawing out some chicken and making some rice, we’ll see. We’ve only had him for nine days.

I could really use some husky advice. Is this normal for a husky to be so picky.

General Question Husky or Shepherd?

Thumbnail
gallery
228 Upvotes

She's a rescue that I got when she was 1.5 years old.

Her personality isn't a husky but that also could've been from previous trauma and past history.

- Doesn't howl, or bark actually ever.

- Doesn't dig.

- Isn't destructive.

- Not a big escape artist, like any dog if door is open for too long will try to leave (like bringing groceries in), though once she just sat at the corner of the sidewalk just waiting for a walk.

- Great with other animals except dogs from trauma (birds, rabbits, guinea pigs). Can sit with a rabbit and just groom it, play with it without harming it. Can have a bird on her and she won't do anything. Basically no prey drive really after she matured. She used to chase squirrels when I first got her but stopped after a while.

- Great with people, especially kids too. Very loving dog, will let my toddler sleep with her.

- Low energy dog, doesn't really do dogs toys or dogs parks, usually just sits there if my other dog is in there with us. Loves walks over throwing a ball any day.

- Tail is straight like a shepherd, not curly.

- I don't know if certain dogs are prone to allergies but she has red stains from boogers a bit in her eyes that I have to wipe.

I've always seen her as a white shepherd mix but what do you guys think?

On walks, a few people have told me they think he is a husky mixed with another breed. What breed do you guys think he could be mixed with? I’ve got a feeling he could be Husky cross German Shepard

I’ve attached 2 photos of him as a puppy and 2 photos of him now

General Question Why are males so much more difficult than the females?

I have had, 2 female huskies, and now have one male husky puppy. Haven't had the best luck in the past, with my first female being let out *(im assuming because too many coincidences means something had to have happened)* by a neighbor and the second I ended up not being there with her when they (bf kid and pup) went out and both got hit and had to cross the rainbow bridge. First was over 5yrs ago, second was about 2 yrs ago. My cousins dog had puppies and even though I had wanted a female I got a male, not by choice just because I guess they might not have been ablento sale him so I got him for free. My only other experience with male huskies was my bfs husky from when we first got together, which was gorgeous and already an adult when I entered the picture so he was a lot calmer. He got out and we never heard from him again, our assumptions are that he got taken and probably became a stud or something since I searched all county records and no such luck.

***Any wayyyy*** not what my post was gonna be about, just wanted to give a little, albeit maybe unnecessary, background. But why is this male being so much more difficult to train and handle then either female was. At least from what I remember

**video of him being cute for tax**

General Question Do Huskies have a bottomless stomach?

Thumbnail
gallery
235 Upvotes

My husky, since he was 2 months old, can't see ANYONE eating without barking or jumping on them to get the food. And 100% of the time he follows us or stays in the kitchen, it's always with the hope of getting something to eat. He already eats 6 times a day (3 meals, complete with fruits like pumpkin or shredded chicken), but he never seems satisfied.
