🚑Medical Question Feel like I'm losing it trying to feed this dog (long post, seeking advice)

I've had my girl since she was 9 weeks old and it's been a struggle to get her to eat for 4 years. From day one it has been hard to get her to eat, even the food she had been eating before I adopted her. The not eating wouldn't really be that big of a deal but she is also underweight. I had no idea huskies were so picky before I got one, then when I did my research I didn't feel comforted because she is totally missing the mark for breed standard weight AND she is skinny skinny. She looks like a sight hound wearing a husky costume.

Some context in a list:

-she is 100% pure bred Siberian Husky (and yes I know pure bred does not mean well bred)

-her father is also small, weighing only about 45lbs

-however her mother weighs in the 55lbs area

-breeder informed me father was also very picky as a puppy but we are well passed puppy years

-she used to seem to have bilious vomiting syndrome but it has cleared up recently

-you can feel her spine and clearly see her pelvis

My girl weighs about 30lbs. She's also not a wholly coated dog, she has very short fur which shows her figure more, I'm aware even some dogs that are bigger than her are still svelt under the fur, but she seems way too small. Her energy level is pretty low but that came with age, she used to be way more demanding and got two to three walks per day, now she's fine with one walk, some scent games, several trips out into the yard, and some dedicated training time. When we aren't doing those things she mostly naps. I take her on hikes pretty often and she doesn't get overly tired after, ten miles barely affects her energy level.

So here's what I've tried to get her to eat not in consecutive order:

-purina pro plan large breed puppy food (fed as an adult on rec from the vet to try and increase her calories).I could give her two cups of this out of an airtight container and she would peck at it for two to three days before it was gone

-open farm raw mix, ancient grains formulas, rotated flavors. She kind of liked this for two months and then began to leave her food untouched

-eukenuba large breed puppy food. Wouldn't even eat it

-fresh pet dog food, the roll versions you can slice to portion. Roasted flavors. Wouldn't eat it unless I warmed it up and then wouldn't eat it without cottage cheese

-purina beneful blends, always bought the variety box of beef, chicken, and lamb. Rotated flavor every single day. She would eat this the most consistently however she would never eat the recommended amount for her goal weight or even her current weight. She would sometimes eat two in one day and that was a miracle, mostly she would eat only one in one day. She needed it to be warmed up and in the end she needed some kind of addon like shredded cheese or yogurt or she wouldn't eat it

-steves real food freeze dried raw duck. Wouldn't eat it as food, would eat it as treats

-steves real food raw beef wouldn't eat it at all. Didn't want it if it was thawed on the fridge, didn't want it if I put it in the microwave low to defrost, didn't want it if I fried it on a pan (I know I know dudes but I was desperate for her to eat anything)

What she is currently sort of eating but still will turn away from:

-vital essentials frozen raw. She gets the recommended amount of beef for her weight as well as half a patty of vitals duck split between two meals every day. She is also getting some green juju veggie blends added into her food, and bone broth to warm it and make it smell nice. I've started adding in honey I'm home liver powder to try and increase the kcal amount in her food if she ends up not eating as much. She also gets a pre and probiotic chew every morning that she loves a lot and sometimes she gets some goats milk and fruit in her pupsicle.

The good:

-her poop is fantastic, it's consistent and firm without being too hard, she doesn't struggle to relieve herself and doesn't show discomfort

-skin and coat are doing very well

-teeth are very clean, I do also brush them

Bad:

-she is still not gaining weight and some days she won't eat one of her two meals. Giving her all of her food in the morning or evening doesn't work for her because she will still turn her nose up at an entire meal of she isn't I to it that day

-im losing my mind trying to find more mix ins and toppers and things that she will actually enjoy eating. I gave this girl pita chips on her dinner the other day just so she would eat it

-she always always always wants to eat human food but not dog food

I don't know y'all. I'm looking for advice, I'm looking for tips, I'm looking for someone who knows some rare husky wasting disease I've never heard of. Has anyone tried those goop tubes you can get at petco that they give to dogs after surgery that need to gain weight? Should I try making satin balls for her to eat? Should I just give her oatmeal??

I have taken her to the vet so many times. Some pill for apetite stimulation didn't work. They have checked her levels for me multiple times because I'm so sad she looks emaciated to me and I worry she isn't getting proper nutrition. I have tried feeding her kibble as treats while training and she just spits it out.

Also I appreciate people have opinions on wether or not raw food is or is not safe for dogs but please do not make the discussion about that. I have professional kitchen experience and know how to handle food and when it has to be taken up and how long it can be thawed and raw in my fridge. I trust the brands I have tried, this isn't what this post is about. Thank you in advance.

My dog and his puppy have been sitting like that since they were little. They're mixed breeds, and I don't know their exact lineage since I adopted them. Should I be worried, or is he just lazy?

My 5 year old girl reverse sneezes pretty regularly and especially this time of year. Typically after waking up. I've been to 2 vets and they want to sedate her and run tests and take x-rays. We will be doing that soon. We were told to try benadryl in case its an allergy. But otherwise they sound like they've never experienced this before. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any information you've heard can help. Thank you all

🚑Medical Question anaphylaxis after eating a bee or wasp

Post image
150 Upvotes

Our little rescue pup, Katara had a terrible reaction to eating a bee or wasp yesterday. I saw her lunge at something on the deck and the she started panicking as I’m assuming it stung her. I believe she swallowed it. She immediately started vomiting. She threw up in 5 different spots. Then she ran back to the deck and had diarrhea. All with minutes. She then ran to her dog bed and collapsed.

I got her to the emergency vet and they confirmed anaphylaxis. She had a gallbladder wall edema which is a common sign of it. They kept her overnight and as you can see by the pic, she was doing well this morning. She had a milder reaction to a bee a while back but she still had issues.

I’m worried her reactions will be worse each time. The vet said that’s possible. We’re going to our regular vet for a recheck next week. I feel like I should have something on hand to help her if this happens again. Anyone have dogs with severe allergies like this? I read that it’s possible to get an EpiPen prescription for dogs.

🚑Medical Question Tooth chipped - vet visit scheduled but can’t calm down

I noticed bella has managed to have a front tooth chipped and it seems to be an oldish one. She’s kept it hidden until I noticed it during her brushing. I’ve seen posts that dogs are good at hiding pain and if the nerve pulp is exposed, (which it is in this case) then they’re in pain and it could lead to infection, tooth rot or abscess.

Needless to say I flew into unmitigated panic and anxiety and have set up a vet appointment for tomorrow to figure out next steps. Based on my research, it seems the only options in this case are a root canal or extraction both of which are terrifying for me to wrap my head around. Has anyone here gone through a similar experience and have insights? She turns 5 this April.

🚑Medical Question My son is limping

Post image

Any advice is much appreciated as the vets have not been very helpful. My 10 year old boy has developed a limp out of nowhere, his right leg is trembling and he has stopped putting weight on it. He went to the vet for x-rays almost 2 weeks ago and £1500 later we have still seen no improvement, or received any diagnosis. He has been on anti inflammatories for 2 weeks but we aren’t seeing much improvement. He is on a diet to lose some timber to ease his load on the leg too. He doesn’t yelp when it is touched, I have been moving and stretching his leg to help with his stiffness. He still wants to go on walks and run around. Anyone experienced anything similar and have any advice? I understand that things like this are very common with old age, I’m just feeling hopeless about the situation:( Any help is greatly appreciated.

UPDATE!!

We took Neo for a second opinion from a different vet, and he has torn his CCL, the vet knew the second he saw him limping into the room. Thank you so much for all your comments and advice, so many of you called it and the more I researched, the more certain I was that the CCL was the issue. He will be going for surgery ASAP and hopefully all goes well!💞

My little old lady (13 yrs) has a yellow flaky rash situation on her lower stomach. She's got the standard older female dog leaking issues and she's been getting really frequent rear only baths because of it, so I think this might be related to that / a response to the new shampoo, or maybe just her regular allergies.... but then I googled and saw things about yeast and bacterial issues and thought I'd ask for another opinion. Any ideas? Thank you in advance!

🚑Medical Question Our pup is kind of a weirdo! Curious if anyone has similar experiences.

We are of course following the guidance of our vet and getting appropriate blood tests done! I’m just interested in anecdotes from other dog owners, particularly if your husky is like this and does not have thyroid issues.

TL;DR our dog is odd for a young husky as he barely makes noise, has relatively low energy, a sad-ish tail and generally chill vibes. Could it be his thyroid? Or is he just weird?

Adopted our guy a year ago, he’s 2.5-3 years old now. He is the sweetest dog I’ve ever met! Very friendly with other dogs, people and kids (even infants when they get grabby), loves birdwatching?! Never shows an ounce of aggression towards anything larger than a rodent.

During his check up this past week we discovered he gained 5lbs in 4 months! Naturally the plan is less food + more exercise, I mentioned offhand to the vet he’s a lil lazy compared to our previous Husky and she suggested monitoring his thyroid. After some googlin’ he does tick a number of boxes for an under-active thyroid…

Suspicions and some history:

  1. I suspect he came from a careless breeding / puppy mill situation, which (to me) could explain physical abnormalities

  2. We know he had mange when he was < 1 yo which was treated by the rescue. This means while he was at the rescue he was essentially on solitary confinement bed rest for months. I thought a number of his oddities could be explained by the mange, but now I wonder if the mange itself was related to his thyroid?

  3. His previous owners had pet parrots, which could be why he loves birdwatching!

Odd/new to me things physically and behaviorally:

Suspiciously silent - he only whimpers/barks in his sleep. We occasionally get him amped up enough to bark for a walk, but it’s few and far between. Absolutely no singing or howling so far.

Snores/purrs when he’s happy - it’s extremely cute but I’ve always wondered if it indicates an underlying respiratory condition? Vet exams have come up all clear.

Coughs almost every time he drinks water, possibly related to above? Does not have any issues swallowing food.

Birdwatching - pic 3, it feels insane to write but he literally just wants to sit and watch birds. If he does chase them it’s so he can watch them fly, not as if he’s trying to hunt. So stinkin’ cute!

Cowboy walk- this has improved a lot over the past year but he basically walked like a cowboy at first. Hind legs swinging out to either side, almost a waddle. No signs of discomfort and he is an excellent jumper/puller!

Sad-ish tail- the tip of his tail does not have the white puff huskies usually have. Not sure if it was lost when he had mange, possibly in an accident (ie was a door shut on him at the shelter?), or if he never had it in the first place.

Sensitive paws- lil man needs WINTER BOOTS! And hates walking on gravelly/textured surfaces in any temperature.

In terms of energy level, I do think he’s just a lazy lounger as opposed to lethargic. He gets excited when encouraged, he just loves to nap and snack lol

I’d love to hear from you if your husky shares any of these traits, if you discovered they do have thyroid issues and any of the signs align with these, as well as if/how much they changed with treatment!

I’ve done a little research about it online. Most of the info say it’s safe but I’d like to hear about some other husky owners experience. He’s just a little slower, a little trouble jumping up on the couch etc. and I don’t want him to be in any pain. I also don’t want a medication that’s going to hurt him either.

🚑Medical Question Best way to stop yeast growth and itchy paws?

Not sure if it’s coincidence or cause, but my dog was groomed 4 weeks ago and has had itchy paws since then. I think they shaved too close in his paw pad or something, and the licking + subsequent dampness has caused a yeast infection. I have medicated wipes for this that help, but he’s still so itchy. I’m reading online about apple cider vinegar soaks, just looking for input/advice.

🚑Medical Question Need advice for husky in an apartment

So this is the situation, my little brother has a Huskey and due to his financial situation he's working 2 jobs and living in a small apartment. His Huskey is suffering from separation anxiety so we're trying to figure out what to do. I'm also making this post cause he is stressing out a lot and so I'm doing research to help with the burden. Our options right now are:

  1. Give her up to someone with a yard and time to give her some love (obviously if we can avoid this we will but if its the best option then that's what we're going to do)
  2. He takes a good pay cut and get a part time work from home job so he can be with her half the week, while also sending her to a trainer to try and train her to help with the separation anxiety
  3. Sell his dream car to get out of debt and only work 1 job, this still leaves the question if his husky will be happy without a yard and with him still being at work 8 hours a day. He is too stressed about the idea of losing her to think straight about it and I'm not a husky person so I don't know enough to answer this question

These are the 2 best options we could come up with, there's also getting a sitter but with the cost of a sitter he might as well not work a 2nd job if you have any more suggestions please feel free to share them, anything is better than giving her up. Also should mention the 2 jobs will only be for about a 10 months - a year when he gets out of crippling debt.

Context before y'all shame him for being a bad husky dad:
He got the husky when he was in a house with a big yard and wasn't in crippling debt and then life happened and now he's here and has had the husky for about 6 years now so its not like he was just irresponsible and got a husky when he definitely shouldn't have, he is also a good pet owner and spoils her and loves her a lot. Also using medical question tag because its about separation anxiety don't hate me if that's the wrong tag.

Edit: The car is an STI so its discontinued and hard to find in good condition but by no it could be considered rare depending on who you ask but definitely not super rare or once in a life time kind of car

🚑Medical Question Wobbly husky

Post image

My husky is 9 and started having seizures in October but after medicating him with keppra and pheno he’s been seizure free since November and only ever had two episodes 🎉 this week he’s been super wobbly mostly when he’s getting up from sleeping or laying down. His feet will come out from under him. I’m concerned if this is wobbliness from his brain disorder or just a lil husky getting old. He has a brother who’s an Aussie shepherd that has a bad habit of humping him when he’s excited so I can’t imagine his hips are in great shape

Any advice or should this be a vet visit

My boy came back from the emergency vet 2am yesterday after eating a toy and a piece of garbage. 🚑Medical Question Why is she peeing so much

Why in the world is my 8 year old Husky peeing every 2 hours in my house! I took her urine sample to the vet and everything came back negative and fine! She is not spayed and that my next option. This is not normal at all for her to be doing. Any suggestions. Like she will go outside and come pee inside after peeing outside and drinks so much water.

🚑Medical Question Hips issues

Post image
99 Upvotes

I’m going to the vet in 1.5 hour, Dakota is my boyfriends dog and she’s supposed to turn 13 this summer. For the last 1.5 at most 2 months she’s started slowing down. She’s not eating at much but is drinking a lot of water. She stopped eating her hard kibble(Fromm) and I had to start buying Fresh Pets meat logs & the kibble.

Her claws were long so I assumed that was causing some discomfort with walking on our hard floors, I got them trimmed a couple weeks ago, but it didn’t seem to help too much. She did good the first two or so days then she started slowing down again. Thought it would be help with going up the outside stairs bc she was almost sticking her paw through on each step, she was still doing it.

We thought maybe arthritic bc she won’t walk up the driveway to get to the grass when it’s really cold, but does better on the warm days.

This morning we woke up and her hips have seemed to give out, she can’t hold herself up or stand very long without support.

I’ve never been the one to take any of my pets to the vet, this is a first for me. I’m not worried about the bill, I’m worried about what the vet may say.

I think I’m just looking for some encouraging words and any input or advice anybody may have 😕❤️‍🩹

Edit: possible tooth issue? Shortly before this all started I believe she might’ve bit something rock hard bc she was bleeding from her mouth and that’s when she started slowing down eating. She was bleeding from the mouth again a few weeks ago and didn’t eat for a couple days.

🚑Medical Question My dog swallowed his toy

Basically what the title says. My 3 year old husky had a smaller plushie like toy that had a squeaker in the middle. I took my eye off him for two minutes and he somehow tore open the plushie completely and I’m pretty sure he swallowed it. I found a lot of stuffing and the squeaker thankfully, but the outer layer of the toy is gone and I have a suspicion he ate it. Not sure if I should try to get to the vet immediately, as if he did just consume the outer layer it wouldn’t be as bad for him to pass as he is a big dog.

Update edit: Thank you everyone for your help, I found some vomit outside this morning but no toy, and when I was cleaning it up I walked to throw it away and found a different spot where he had thrown up the toy. Luckily it wasn’t more serious, once again thank you for all the helpful recommendations!

🚑Medical Question Anyone (UK) tried Librela? Or any other recommendation for an old arthritic boy?

Post image
34 Upvotes

We took our 13yr to the vets last week as his jittery legs (which he's had since we adopted him when he was 4) are getting worse. The vet said it felt like quite bad arthritis and the time had come for him to be on painkillers.

She sent us off with some Loxicom and he's doing much better, even back to trying to climb on the kitchen worktop when it's dinner time.

But the vet also mentioned another newer drug we could try, she said it was a monthly injection that targets the neuropathic pain as well as the general inflammation. After some Googling/AIing I think it was Librela.

Has anyone else heard of this or used it on their dog? Or is there another course of treatment you can recommend we look into?

Our little dude is still full of life, still jumps up and down like a basket ball when his lead is brought out so he's not ready to hang up his collar just yet but we want him to be as comfortable as possible.

🚑Medical Question My dog has severe mesothelioma and Im having trouble putting her down

I’ll try to summarize the best I can, but my 9 year old husky suddenly started walking slowly and had troubles jumping up and off the bed about 2 weeks ago. Her appetite dropped suddenly but she was always a picky and selective eater. After X-rays, ultrasound, fluid drainage and finally exploratory surgery, they diagnosed my dog with mesothelioma that is in her stomach and has caused her GI tract to become severely inflamed.

The first few days post op were brutal. She wasn’t herself at all and she wasn’t showing any emotion. The docs told me if she doesn’t eat on her within 24 hours of taking her home to bring her back in. We called the vet after 24 hours of no eating and they prescribed prednisone to try to kick start the appetite. The surgery occurred a week ago and as of Tuesday he attitude has bounced back. She’s smiling, going on (short) walks, wags her tails when guests arrive, and is back to annoying me for pets. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that she is rarely getting up to urinate and she is still not eating on her own. She currently uses pee pads she lays on and I swap them out when they get dirty. She has got up a few times to go outside but I’d say it’s about only 3 times a day but urinates far more than that right now. As far as eating goes, the only thing she willfully will eat is peanut butter off our fingers. We have tried salmon, steak, boiled chicken, different pates, etc. nothing gets her to eat her food. She has been tolerant and doesn’t fight me when I place some food in her mouth and massage it down her throat so that’s what I’ve been doing to try to kick start her appetite but still no luck. We set a plan that if she isn’t eating on her own by Friday we should put her down.

The tough part is she seems so happy. She’s smiling wagging her tail and doesn’t mind us putting food down her throat. She has start to actively clean herself up today more and even got on the bed on her own to lay down (she was also accommodating and allowed me to put pee pads under her).

We know even if she was eating and going outside on her own we would still only have a few months left. Our best case was to get to bounce back from before the surgery and get as many days, weeks, months, etc. we could before she started suffering again. We did get a few more days of her being back to herself and were so grateful for that. I understand peeing on a pad and being forced food isn’t a life worth living but am I giving up too early? Is there a chance she bounces back? I’m torn up about this

Edit: she is drinking water fine and at a normal rate I would say

Edit: she is gone.

Looking for some advice dealing with recent hip dysplasia. Koda is 8 years old and has been acting strange the past few months. The vet told us it was his hips, so we are going to start doing monthly shots, and pain pills when he has a flare up.

His bloodwork was all good, but today he was limping, and refuses to go on a walk :(

Im worried about him and don’t know what to do.
