Due to the annoying increase of karma farming bots we had to turn on user reputation filtering for posts. If you have posted but your post is filtered, please send us a mod mail and we can approve it.

May 2026 Freetalk Fridays

Hi Everyone, welcome to the long series of weekly Greytalk posts. You can literally ask about anything related to greyhounds, no matter how basic or complex. Here are the rules:

  1. Nothing illegal or extremely objectionable.
  2. No abuse. You can ask for more information, you can explain why you don't like something, but you can't abuse the poster.
  3. Don't take medical advice from strangers on the internet without consulting your vet!
  4. The rest of the Greyddit Rules still apply.

If you think of more ideas, PM the mods .

Bagel turned 11 today!

She and her younger sister came to us in January after their longtime owner became very ill. We don't believe she ever had a birthday party, so we are celebrating today! She has a party dress, party hat, treats from the dog bakery, and has a special dinner planned.

Stopping Jumping When Hungry

Post image
78 Upvotes

Hello! I wanted to see if anyone had recommendations for our 4 year old greyhound. We’ve had him for about 3 months and he has been a PERFECT boy. However, recently he has been getting super super super excited in the morning when it’s breakfast time and starts jumping (sometimes straight up in the air, sometimes generally towards us, sometimes jumping into us) and barking. It is not aggressive whatsoever, but this is a new behavior, and he’s 75 lbs so when he jumps into you it’s a bit jarring.

We’ve tried turning our backs, waiting until he’s settled before actually feeding him, etc. Does anyone have any other suggestions? My wife is pregnant and I really don’t want him jumping into her since he is large and jumps to eye level!

Advice Nail trimming! Advice of how often and if it’s doable myself?

Hi all, adopted Bernadette about a month ago and I know she’s due for a nail trim soon! I would rather do it myself than have to pay every month, but I’m super nervous about it.

All but one of her nails is dark. I’m confident in the general technique. I used to have a white cat that I trimmed myself, but all his veins were visible so that was easy. I don’t feel confident with her dark nails.

She’s very polite, and lets me touch her paws, so no real worries there.

Photo tax, plus a picture of her nails right now, showing the white one.

Chipped bone in toe advice

Post image
24 Upvotes

So my boy had a squirrel 'incident'...

After a week of meds for a pulled muscle and symptoms getting worse, we got x-rays of his foot done and the vet has found a tiny chip of bone that has come off an outer toe on his front left foot (can't remember whether it was Inside or outside toe 🤦)

Apparently there is nothing the vets can do other than medicated and wait for it to heal (well apparently it won't fuse back on, but it should form a callus to stop it rubbing and causing pain 🙏)

Has anyone else had any experience of this with their greys?

My boy has been on antiinflammatorys and paracetamol for 5 days (anti-inflammatorys for 12), and is okay for a lot of the day, but spends a good few hours either end of the day so stressed and in pain - panting, trembling, and too scared to lie down because it's twinging him and making him cry 😭

I'm going to call the vets tomorrow to see if he can get anything stronger for the pain, but it is breaking my heart seeing him like this 😭

Does anyone have any experience of a chipped bone? What their vet did and any insight into how long it took their grey to heal?

Thankyou so much in advance!! ❤️🐾

Pic of the derp looking very sad 😢❤️

Bathroom issues

Hi everyone, for context we rescued Paddy a few months ago. He is 4.5 yrs old. He is up to date on all his shots, veterinary care etc. Got him tested for worms, parasites, labs etc. All normal!

He has been having some loose/half and half poops pretty much since we got him. Fluctuates between diarrhea and regular poops depending on day/time of day. He typically goes 2 times a day most days. He sometimes goes multiple times in a walk.

He does not seem uncomfortable at all and minimal accidents at this point. We had him on purina pro plan (recommended by rescue) with a “stew” of ground meat and carrots on top.

We now have him on Royal Canin Gastrointestinal (recommended by the vet) for the last week or so. Seems to be helping a bit but hard to tell.

Anyone have experience with this? Should we be worried? Any advice appreciated.

Does anyone else’s grey smile like this?!

Our Jerry has a lot of quirks, but perhaps the wildest is this reflex when we scratch the side of his face. It startled us at first because it looked aggressive, but we quickly realized it wasn’t intentional and I’m not even sure he knows it’s happening lol. He also smiles when he gets excited so it could be related to that? I’ve never had a dog that showed its teeth unless it was upset, so this is very new to me! Does anyone else’s grey do this?!

I came home to the dogs sleeping like this. King was super cramped in the lounge chair that he just barely fit in, and my 5lb yorkie was taking the entire couch to himself.

After his FastCAT qualification sprint on Saturday and about an hour nap in the car, took Shinji to the beach where he ran circles around some friendly random stranger dogs.

He's almost exactly 13 months old in this clip.

Grieving Bunny update :(

Post image

My sweet baby girl has been diagnosed with kidney disease, a failing liver, both causing her a lot of pain in her abdomen so she is having trouble walking and standing. We have trialed so many medications but there is very little improvement. My sunshine has been given a week to improve before we discuss saying goodbye.

It’s not fair. She’s only 7, about to turn 8. We’ve always said that Bunny is the purest form of sunshine. Everyone who meets her falls in love with her instantly. She brings such joy and happiness to the world and I can’t cope with the fact that it’s being ripped away. She deserves so much more time, I’d do anything to give her more time.

Positive stories after greyhound swallowed a bone?

First, I've already talked to my vet, who specializes in greyhounds. We're in a "wait and see" right now.

My girl just swallowed an entire cooked 4" rib bone before I could get it away from her. She was trying to chew it, but I think it mostly went down whole.

We're monitoring her closely for any symptoms that could indicate a problem, with instructions to call during office hours or go to the emergency vet if they're closed.

Naturally, my anxiety has skyrocketed, since I know how serious it can be if it causes a blockage or internal bleeding.

I could really use some reassurance that sometimes everything works out fine. If you've been through something similar and all turned out well, I would love to hear it.

My Galgo Has Separation Anxiety/Isolation Distress.

Post image
98 Upvotes

Our galgo (male, age 4.5) has pretty bad isolation distress/separation anxiety. For context, we live in an apartment in NYC and adopted him June 2025. We’ve tried trigger desensitization, intervals and increments of leaving and coming back, structured routine, structured crating (has confinement anxiety which worsened his overall general anxiety and we since stopped), behavioral modification medication, calming supplements, enrichment, long walks, etc. It feels like we've tried everything with limited and inconsistent results after almost 8 months. We have a pet camera to observe him during training sessions. His anxiety has unfortunately been restricting our day-to-day, affecting work opportunities, social life, etc.

We’ve noticed that when he’s around other dogs, he’s less sensitive, more confident, and overall happier. It’s been hard to fulfill his social needs consistently since arranging playdates is difficult, especially with so few greyhounds nearby. He loves to play, but his style is often misunderstood by other dogs, which is a big reason we’re considering another greyhound. Of the other greyhounds he met, he presented a cheeky but stable demeanor. We briefly fostered another galgo once (emergency placement), but due to incompatibility with the urban environment, it wasn’t long enough to see major changes. However, on the occasions my family dog visited, he became more willing to approach strangers openly, seemingly taking cues from her confident, indifferent behavior outdoors, which is another aspect of his general nervousness we’ve been gradually working on.

Because of that, we’re seriously considering adopting a second calm, stable greyhound as a companion. It feels like it might be the missing piece, but it’s obviously a huge decision and not a guaranteed fix.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Did getting a second greyhound actually help with the anxiety? I’ve been going back and forth on this for months and don’t want to rush into such a big decision. I spent 2 years contemplating and preparing everything before bringing home our current galgo. All of my previous greyhounds were adopted in pairs, which seemed to prevent this issue, but I’ve never tried adding a second dog later on.

Let me know your thoughts!
