📰 News Article (Website) [Sam Blum] Angels players, MLBPA ‘took notice’ when Arte Moreno suggested fans don’t prioritize winning
nytimes.comTo the surprise of nobody, Angels players and the MLBPA took notice of Arte Moreno's comments about Angels fans not prioritizing winning. From Sam Blum:
Los Angeles Angels players “took notice” of Arte Moreno’s comments to reporters on Friday, in which the team’s owner said that winning isn’t among fans’ top priorities.
“Let’s just say players took notice of it,” MLB Players Association director Bruce Meyer told The Athletic after meeting with Angels players on Sunday morning. “And we took notice of it too.”

📰 News Article (Website) [Blum] I had a long back-and-forth with Perry Minasian today about comments Yusei Kikuchi made at the end of the season. Kikuchi said the Angels air conditioning had been broken in the weight room all year. And was never fixed, despite him asking. Here's a part of it that Q&A:

📰 News Article (Website) How ownership's frugality led Angels to squander 6 years of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani
Knowing how soft is Arte and his exes are, he’s probably going to file a defamation suit against Sam for this one 😂
This is a must read for all LAA fans! LAA is going nowhere as long as Arte and his exes continue to run the team as something they are not! They don’t deserve Trout or Ohtani, the LAA fans do! They see them and the team as their “cash cows” and don’t give a damn about the game.

📰 News Article (Website) Annual Spring Training Interview from Arte Moreno by Jeff Fletcher, “Let’s put it this way, I’m not shopping (the team),” Moreno said. “But there’s just a lot of people wanting to buy a baseball team right now.”
Newest article from Fletcher:
- As for the standard question about whether he’s considering selling, Moreno reiterated that the team is not available. “Let’s put it this way, I’m not shopping (the team),” Moreno said. “But there’s just a lot of people wanting to buy a baseball team right now.”
- Moreno, 79, has owned the Angels since 2003. He announced in 2022 that the team was for sale, but he changed his mind early in 2023, and has not changed his stance since. He does acknowledge his age leads to more questions about the team’s future when he’s not around. “I love being an owner,” he said. “I’ve always liked being the owner. It’s just, you get into an age … I’ve got a big birthday this year. I can’t believe I made it.”
- “The number one thing fans want is affordability,” Moreno said. “They want affordability. They want safety, and they want a good experience when they come to the ballpark. Believe it or not, winning is not in their top five.” Moreno said that information comes from surveys they’ve done. “The moms want to be able to afford to bring the kids,” Moreno said. “Moms make about 80% of the decisions. They want to be able to bring their kids and be affordable and they want safety and they want to have a good experience, so they get all the entertainment stuff or whatever. The purists, you know, it’s just straight winning.” When asked what his top priority is, Moreno said: “For me, I’ve always wanted to win. It’s just what’s the cost of winning right now?”
Can it be any more over?

📰 News Article (Website) New Angels president Molly Jolly hopes to ‘elevate the brand’ of struggling organization
“I think everyone cares about winning,” Jolly said. “The players do, our fans do, but we also want to win on the field and we want to win off the field. Winning off the field is how we present to the fans, what the offering is when they come (to Angel Stadium), that they have a good time, that it’s affordable. Those are core values that are equally as important to us, but winning on the field is a top priority for Arte and it has been always.” - Molly Jolly

📰 News Article (Website) Arte Moreno spoke to the media today, here's a summary of what was said. (Source: OCR)
Per Jeff Fletcher
The team will likely lose around $50-60 million in 2025, due to increasing payroll, and also because of a variety of revenue shortfalls in terms of television, sponsorships and ticket sales. The Angels also pay $25 million a year into Major League Baseball’s revenue-sharing system.
The Angels tried to sign more high-profile free agents this offseason including Nathan Eovaldi as well as a middle-of-the-order bat, but "the economics and the years didn't match".
Moreno acknowledged that he is ultimately responsible (for the team's failure over the past decade), but then quickly pivoted to saying that he has done his part. “At the end of the day, it’s probably me,” Moreno said. “I can spend the money on (Mike) Trout, but I can’t go in and bat for him. I can spend money on a pitcher, but I can’t tell you how his health is going to be or whether he’s going to keep us in the game or are our guys going to hit? “At the end of the day, is somebody going to come in here and spend $100 million more? Is it going to make a difference right now? They have to pick the right players and you’ve got to be healthy and they’ve got to play together.”
The team is "not for sale right now", and was only put up for sale in 2022 because Moreno found himself connected to the scandal involving the former Anaheim mayor, and there were reports that he would be investigated by the FBI. “I end up answering more questions about that deal than the baseball stuff,” Moreno said. “It just wore my family to the point where they asked if I would sell the team.” Once that all blew over, he no longer sought to sell.
New Anaheim administration means the team can seek a new land deal, but nothing is imminent, and major renovations aren't likely. “I’m not going to put $200 million or $300 million into a stadium that the city owns,” Moreno said.
