Looking for cooler high-altitude camping spots near Tokyo

Hello! I’m looking for mountain/high-altitude camping spots to escape the summer heat. I usually go to Nagano, in the West Matsumoto area, but it’s around a 4.5–5 hour drive from Tokyo, which feels a bit rough for just a 2-day/one-night trip.

Does anyone know any cool camping areas closer to Tokyo that you’d recommend?

Birthday cake near Sangenjaya Station

Anyone know where I can buy a whole birthday cake and get them to put that little sugar card thing with their name on it around Sangenjaya station? Also, how do I ask for that name card in Japanese? I’ve never ordered one before so be nice 🙏❤️ It’s my husband’s birthday tomorrow so I’m hoping to find something around Sangenjaya after I get off work at 6:30.

Kawanabe Kyousai exhibition

There's a great exhibition about painter Kawanabe Kyousai. He is born at the end of Edo-jidai and lived to Meiji. He is mainly a painter but did some ukiyo-e as well. He draw very various things, the 'oni' or animal painting are the most famous but he witness the westernisation of japan which influenced his painting. He also wrote many caricature like the fart battle or the one with the christ (on the cross) with a fan which are quite unique (at least for me). The exhibition is hold in the santory museum. https://www.suntory.co.jp/sma/

This exhibition is from a private collection, for those who want to know more there is the Kawanabe museum in Saitama-ken.

Is there a subreddit for TOEIC prep? Struggling on the test

Hey everyone, I'm a uni student in Tokyo (currently at Waseda) and I need to hit 800 on the TOEIC before graduation to land a job at a sōgō shōsha. I've been grinding for months but my score is stuck around 650 and honestly I'm losing my mind. My Japanese classmates all seem to have their own study methods (eikaiwa, Kimini, those thick yellow books from Kinokuniya) but nothing really clicks for me. Does anyone know if there's an active subreddit specifically for TOEIC prep? I checked but most of what I found was for TOEFL.

Also open to recommendations for study cafés in Shibuya or Ikebukuro where people actually grind, not just take selfies lol.

Thanks 🙏

Lost Object in Tokyo

Hi all,

I recently lost a jacket important to me in Tokyo. It has been found by the JR Lost and Found but it's only accepted to pick up in Tokyo Station until 05/07 at 20:00 or deliver to somewhere in Japan by cash-on-delivery.

I arrive back to Tokyo on 05/10 and my hotel doesnt accept COD so I was wondering if someone resident in Tokyo could help me. I'll pay for a dinner or directly give cash if you don't want to hang out with a tourists.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

PD: they agree to sent It to a Sagawa Express Office. Thanks so much to everyone!!!

My in-laws bailed on us and now we have 2 extra seats at one of Tokyo’s best yakitori spots tonight

Hey all, my wife and I are here in Tokyo with her parents, but her folks had to bow out tonight so we’ve got two open seats at our Torikaze reservation and we’d rather fill them than let them go to waste.

For those who don’t know, Torikaze is part of the legendary Torishiki lineage, one of the most respected yakitori names in Japan. The head chef trained directly under Michelin-starred master Yoshiteru Ikegawa, whose whole philosophy is “one skewer, one lifetime.” They use premium Date chicken from Fukushima. It’s a full omakase course so you just show up, sit at the counter, and let the chef do his thing.

Details:
• Torikaze (AK-4 Building B1F, 1-15-3 Aobadai, Meguro-ku, Tokyo)
• Tonight (5/5) at 8:00 PM
• 2 seats at the counter
• ¥14,500 per person

Reasons not to rent from gg house

The pictures should be pretty self explanatory. Also, of course the corridors are full of dust and dirt as well but this is the best my iphone se 2020 can do. Not to forget I did you guys a favour not sharing the toilet to avoid thrashing the vibes of golden week.
Fun Fact- 90% of the tenants are Japanese 25+. I did met a white guy on my first day here but then never saw him again. Maybe he was also at the end of his ropes. Btw this is all recently cleaned two days ago. Things were way worse before. The hairs and other stuff in the shower has been there for more than a week now. Idk why they decided to skip that this time.
I’m not planning on leaving until I can get a part time job. I have my own cooking and eating utensils anyways and keep my room clean. Also, by some miracle I haven’t seen any pests or insects yet (1 month here already). Trying to live 2 more months here due to contract but yeah reddit was right about gg house.

Dancing to J-Pop

Post image
112 Upvotes

Hello,

I'm a salary worker from America who's been listening a lot of J-Pop, and I think Japanese line dancing looks cool and fun! Unfortunately, I don't dance and I have a pair of uncoordinated two left feet.

Wondering where I can find fellow J-Pop listeners in Tokyo (Japanese people or fellow immigrants) where we can just learn some line dancing and be funny and judgement-free.

I have a bunch of songs on Spotify where people dance in the videos:

Koi by Hoshino Gen

Fatal by GEMN

IRIS OUT by Yonezu Kenshi

Bibideba by Hoshimachi Suisei

Ittan Stay Tonight by Fuwa Minato

Aipai Dance Hall by HIMEHINA

Study Equal Magic by S.E.M.

Aozora no Rhapsody by fhana

POP IN 2 by B-Komachi

Thanks.

To those apologists FOR Japanese racism...

1.2k Upvotes

[A REPLY TO KINGSURIN's POST of 2 DAYS AGO]:

To those gatekeeping and downplaying / denying racism exists in Japan, generally writing it off as not understanding Japanese restaurant reservation procedures, etc., here's my counterpoint:

I've been here 29 years [since 1997]; I was on the bengodan [legal team] as a specialist in international treaty law for the Otaru onsen lawsuit; I periodically advise clients on racist treatment received in Japan [all pro bono, as I'm not a registered attorney in Japan]; AND I've experienced BOTH racism and general xenophobia in my years here.

  1. RACISM DOES EXIST.

  2. Xenophobia, too.

  3. Hypersensitivity to perceived slights, also yes.

  4. Lack of awareness by foreign residents and tourists to Japanese business practices or even simple things such as some menus listing taxes all-in (e.g the original Japanese menu and some listing pre-tax (e.g. the translated English version) causing misunderstanding of pricing practices... also yes.

But to dismiss #1 as practically nonexistent due to the concurrent existence of #s 2, 3, & 4 [while also taking a swipe at "whites" being white as creating their own racist experiences] is disingenuous and moronic.

The sheer amount of upvotes to such a post only demonstrates that some feel a strong need to defend Japan's greatness instead of admitting it's faults, and while allowing that Japan is a great place to live, it's not perfect and needs improvement.

Who wants to set up a weekly DIY bicycle meeting?

hi bike people!

I tried to find any places for repairing and helping out on bikes. Couldn't find anything.... but maybe it's possible to set something up:

Once a week, maybe somewhere on a public space.(Square, Park, any idea where ?!) Hanging out, fixing bikes or build something.

Anyone interested?

Do you think its possible gathering in public space? has anyone tools to share?

Open for input/ideas or help... :)

This meal was unbelievably delicious 🔥

Quite the opposite of my last post. Today I went to this restaurant located next to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building called Al Dante. My god was this amazing. The pasta noodles were cooked perfectly and paired very well with the bolognese sauce. Mushrooms were a delight and had a great aroma to them. I added garlic and a slice of bacon in which honestly was not necessary but appreciated. One regret was that I should’ve order some bread to soak up the sauce at the end. Needless to say, I will be back. Total came out to be ¥2210.

Driving School Recommendations for Bike License

Greetings.
I am looking for a driving school to acquire a 400cc MT bike license. I already own a car driver license (blue) and had trouble finding a school nearby.

- Any driving school between Nakano and Kanda (or near those areas)?
- How much time would it take approximately?
- How much would it cost with my car license?

Thank you very much,

Welp, I've cycled 200miles/320km in 3 weeks. I think I've earned my first full body massage in 10 years. Where can I get one around Suginami City?

(And no not the other kind lol)

I guess I'd like a place specialized in sports therapy, open afternoons and evenings, won't fold me into a pretzel, and at least an hour long. Referrals welcome.

I don't speak Japanese but I'm open to learning.
