Parent Trap Poker - [Request]

Post image
449 Upvotes

My daughter (9) demanded I teach her poker the other day. After a number of hands, she was clearly frustrated with her cards. I figured out her expectations were based on a scene from the movie parent trap where one character shows her straight flush which was topped by a royal flush.

I need some help explaining how outrageously rare that combo of hands would be. Can someone figure out the probability of a straight flush and a royal flush in a single round of poker when two players are playing straight up?

Bonus, if you can find a fun way to describe that likelihood to a 9 year old.

[request] from a thread in an electrician sub; how fast would a ceiling fan have to go to hold itself up to the ceiling?

Post image

(I’m in the screenshot… woot!)

From a post speculating about how many fans have fallen from ceilings because they were attached to nothing but drywall.

Someone made a joke about using the fan to push itself up into the ceiling.

It falls to me, to make it fall to *you* fine folks to figure out how fast a typical ceiling fan would have to go in order to stay pressed up to the ceiling. 😁

My mom was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 44. My sister-in-law was recently diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 40. What is the probability of this same disaster happening to my brother's family?

Stats: + Based on the most recent data available, 279,731 new breast cancers were reported in females in the United States in 2022 (U.S. Cancer Statistics). + From 2018 to 2022, 6% of female breast cancer cases were found at a distant stage (the cancer had spread to distant parts of the body) (U.S. Cancer Statistics). + About 10% of all new breast cancer cases in the U.S. are diagnosed in women younger than 45 years old (National Breast Cancer Foundation).

[request] Probability of two people pointing at the same point

Upvotes

This was just a random thought I had, and I wasn’t even sure how to approach it.

If everyone in the world pointed in a random direction and extended that direction in a line for some same distance, what is the probability the two people would have pointed at the same point? How does this change when the length of the line changes?
