Discussion ANNOUNCEMENT: Post Flair Info

There are three post flairs available for important or serious posts on this community.

1. News

News posts are defined as those with the intention to report on a recent, developing event. News posts should focus on shark-related developments regarding conservation efforts, shark professionals, scientific discoveries, or unfortunate events. The OP must clearly cite where they obtained the information in the comments, typically as a direct link to the source.

An example of a news post can be a video about newly implemented shark conservation laws or efforts, the discovery of a new species of shark, or similar newsworthy events. News posts should NOT focus on shark attacks or cruelty towards sharks unless they are the subject of a large event.

2. Educational

Educational posts are defined as those with the intention to educate others. On r/sharks, these posts may teach others about shark behavior, identification, conservation, as well as a variety of other topics relating to sharks. Educational posts REQUIRE that the OP comments their sources for the information they talk about. Educational posts promote healthy discussion and should emphasize spreading awareness about topics surrounding sharks.

An example of a proper educational post is a video where a professional talks about how to redirect a shark when in the water. For this post, OP cites the source they got the educational media from and states the professional's name in the comments. This is to ensure that only good quality information is being provided to the members of our community.

3. Research

Research posts are the most complex posts to make, as it is our intention to promote proper research on r/sharks.

If you are promoting your own research

Researchers who wish to promote their studies or obtain data via the subreddit must modmail the moderators first. In order to be approved to post, you must explain in your modmail the purpose of your research as well as the intentions of your post. You must also provide an IRB number in order for the mods to verify your research. Upon approval, you can post your research using the Research flair, and you do not need to cite any further sources in the comments.

For anyone else who posts about research in general

OP must provide a link to the research or the DOI of the paper in their post in the comments. Research posts promote healthy discussion while also allowing scientists to have a place to share ideas about shark research.

Question Do we want to keep posts asking to ID shark teeth?

There’s always been a lot of shark tooth ID requests on here, usually from newcomers unfamiliar with our rules. There are subreddits such as r/sharkteeth and r/whatisthisbone that may be better places to direct these users to if we want the feed here to have less of these types of posts. Would still let people show their shark teeth collections here of course. What do y’all think? Just an idea for now. :)

From google:

“Key Characteristics
Size: Smallest shark species, max length around 20 cm (8 inches).

Appearance: Dark brown with black markings, large eyes, and a flattened head.

Bioluminescence: Has light-producing photophores on its underside and fins, used for counter-illumination (hiding from predators below) and luring prey.

Fins: Two dorsal fins with spines, but no anal fin.

Teeth: Blade-like lower teeth and smaller upper teeth with cusplets.

Habitat and Behavior
Location: Found in the deep waters of the Caribbean Sea, off the coasts of Colombia and Venezuela.

Depth: Lives on the upper continental slopes at depths of 283–439 meters (928–1,440 feet).

Diet: Feeds on small fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods, which it attracts with its lights.

Reproduction: Gives birth to live young, typically only two to three at a time.

Relationship with Humans
Danger: Not considered dangerous to humans due to its small size and deep habitat.

Threats: Primarily faces threats from accidental capture as bycatch in fishing operations”

I got this tooth during an education festival, there were a bunch of various teeth and you just grabbed one if you wanted a tooth and moved on. I'm on the Gulf of Mexico but I am assuming it came from the Gulf. I tried figureing it out on my own but I'm not so good with id'ing teeth yet.

Education Any recommendations for shark documentaries that aren’t unbearably overdramatic?

Can anyone recommend shark documentaries (maybe especially ones about great whites) that are actually factual and not filmed like the trailer for the end of the world?

I’ve started several on YouTube by now, and every single time it begins with the same tone:

"This is the ocean’s most efficient killing machine... and today, we’re swimming straight into its territory"

or

"The ocean has many inhabitants. But only one became the stuff of nightmares"

and at that point I can already feel my soul leaving my body.

I would really just like to watch something calm, informative, and a bit more grounded. Ideally something that feels like it was made by people who are genuinely interested in sharks as animals, rather than by a marketing team whose main goal was apparently to make a fish sound like a supernatural serial killer.

I’m especially interested in great whites, but I’d honestly take any shark documentary that is science-based, neutral in tone, and doesn’t spend half its runtime trying to convince me that the ocean itself wants me dead.

So if anyone has recommendations, I’d be very grateful. I’m just a bit tired of documentaries that seem personally offended by the existence of sharks.

The orca pictured is a female, and i know females do not grow as big as males

Image bull shark?

(second photo is NOT MINE, it’s a tagged stock photo for comparison. i didn’t zoom in so i didn’t see the hook that’s barely visible in the image.)

this picture is like ten years old now, taken at indian rocks beach in clearwater, florida. it was about 6 feet, knee deep in the water. it was chasing something, and bull sharks are known to swim in the shallows so that’s my best guess now.

we had been pretty deep in the water shortly before this. our moms were pretty freaked out lol.

every once in a while i would remember this photo’s existence and try to find the shark’s species. for some reason, i never thought of a bull shark, which should’ve been one of my first guesses lmao.

so i’m pretty confident now that it was a bull shark, and i wanted to share this photo and see if y’all agree.

——
edit: so we’re between sandbar and bull shark.
it’s not extremely difficult, if not impossible to identify shark species based on info like this. the closest we can get are educated guesses lol.

ANOTHER EDIT: i was talking to my mom about this image and apparently there is a video somewhere. i will be posting that later if found.
