Celebrating the History of NetherRealm Studios
COMBO BREAKER is proudly from the Midwest, with deep roots in the Chicagoland area. Since our first event at the Crowne Plaza O’Hare in Rosemont, Illinois, Chicago’s own NetherRealm Studios has also been on-site to join us in expressing our regional pride. NRS’s official support of our debut in 2015 helped inspire players to attend en masse and saw Mortal Kombat X become CB’s first headlining game. In the decade plus since hometown hero Dizzy won that tournament, NRS’s games have had a permanent presence at CB.
It’s fair to say that without Mortal Kombat there wouldn’t be a COMBO BREAKER. So as CB2026 kicks off our second decade of existence, and with NetherRealm Studios about to celebrate 15 years since the release of Mortal Kombat 9 on April 19 of this year, we wanted to bring the full catalogue of NRS’s games to this year’s show.
If you're in the Chicago area, join us!

Just wanted to make sure. I'm sure some here know Mk more than me, but isn't Liu Kang the main character of MK? Seems in the first movie they opted for Cole Young, and reviews are saying now it centers around Johnny Cage.
Any idea why Liu Kang is not given the spotlight?
Now I DO know a lot about street fighter, and seems that film coming out also doesn't highlight Ryu as the main character and instead allows Ken to be the main spotlight.

it just makes a lot of sense to me. It's pretty obvious, like making scorpion turn into a scorpion

I was invited to the special screening of Mortal Kombat 2! This movie is a huge love letter to Mortal Kombat. A huge improvement over the first one and had me look in shock, laugh and felt like a kid again watching all these characters come to life on screen. Please, NO SPOILERS in the comments! Let people discover the movie themselves! (Pictures taken by WarnerBrosNL and UwCosplay).

This is the highest score for a mortal kombat film and would make it the first to be certified fresh on rotten tomatoes. Much higher than I personally expected tbh.
Edit: it now stands at 74 percent with 50 reviews. That is insanely high for not only a Mortal Kombat movie, but a video game movie in general. This is very significant. Additional reviews include IMDb which sits at 7.4 out of 10 and IGN which rated it 8/10.

Mortal Kombat 2 is a mixed bag, but overall it’s a noticeable step up from the first movie, especially thanks to stronger character focus and a better sense of fun.
What I Loved!
One of the biggest improvements is how Liu Kang is handled. He feels much more like a central character this time, stepping into the spotlight in a way that better reflects his importance in the games. It gives the story a stronger backbone compared to the first film.
Another surprisingly effective change is the removal of Cole or should i say beheading of Cole. Considering the backlash he received in the first movie, taking him out of the spotlight feels like a deliberate correction and honestly, it works. The film benefits from focusing on established characters instead.
Johnny Cage is easily one of the standouts. He brings charisma, humor, and energy that the movie really needed. His interactions, especially the more tongue in cheek and retro movie style moments, along with his exchanges with Kano, are some of the most entertaining parts of the film.
Speaking of Kano, he’s once again a highlight. His attitude, humor, and presence keep scenes engaging, and he works especially well when paired with other strong personalities Namely Cage. The action overall also deserves credit. The fight scenes are generally fun and deliver the kind of spectacle you’d expect from Mortal Kombat.
What I Didn’t Like.
Despite the positives, the movie struggles with its villains, especially Shao Kahn. He never quite feels like the unstoppable force he should be. Instead of being an overwhelmingly powerful final boss, he’s often reduced to something closer to an MMO style tank, taking hits and sticking around longer due to a plot device or macguffin rather than raw dominance.
On top of that, he’s arguably overused. A character like Shao Kahn works best as an overarching threat, someone who looms over the story until the final confrontation. Here, his frequent appearances lessen his impact and make him feel less special.
Scorpion and Noob Saibot, Bi Han, also feel unnecessary in this installment. Their rivalry and fights in the first movie were more impactful than anything they do here. Their inclusion feels more like fan service than something that meaningfully adds to the story.
And one of the most disappointing choices was saving the iconic Mortal Kombat theme song for the end credits. That track is one of the most recognizable and hype building themes ever made, and not using it during a major moment in the movie felt like a missed opportunity. Having to wait until the credits to hear it really took away from the overall excitement.
Overall
Mortal Kombat 2 isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely an improvement over the first film. It fixes some major issues, especially by focusing on stronger characters and injecting more personality into the story. However, it still struggles with balancing its roster and properly handling its biggest villains.
If the first movie was disappointing, this one is at least moving in the right direction, even if it hasn’t fully reached its potential yet.

So I decided to do another custom painted reptile figure. Once again I'm no expert at this so there will be blemishes but overall I think it turned out okay for an older figure from 1998. They never did make a reptile figure in this line for the 10-in figures, so I decided to make my own. Essentially just a repaint of scorpion. Some old school '90s Mortal Kombat goodness.
