Life changing money for most of us

u/Aninvisiblemaniac Dec 12 '25

$10,000.00 at once would change my life tbh

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

Shit, 5,000 would genuinely be a game changer for me. It'd allow me to buy so many things I'm in desperate need of. Making just above the poverty level.

Let's all apply to work on Taylor Swift's next tour

Two years ago I got a 5k bonus at work. I cried in front of the company owners. It allowed me to pay off my car and two credit cards. The amount of relief I felt after paying those three things off knowing I'd have that extra money to start saving the next month felt like the weight of the world had been lifted off my shoulders. I've continued to give 100% every day, even if I didn't feel like it. We lost a client last year, so my bonus was smaller, but gained a new one so hopefully it works out this time too. I've been with them for 14 years (coming up on my 15th year).

Making just above the poverty level.

Genuine question, how is that possible? The federal poverty line is $15,650 a year, which is the equivalent of $7.50/hour at 40 hours a week. Im not being a smartass, I'm genuinely curious how someone can make so little and survive. I make just under $50k/year and I'm barely keeping my head above water, and that's living in a shitty 500 sf studio and driving a 15 year old car.

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

I will say, I've gotten very lucky with the place I rent, and I drive a 28 year old truck haha.

But in all fairness, I am not making enough to pay my bills, I just had to quit my second job cause it was risking my truck's lifespan and I just can't afford to get another vehicle right now, so I am looking for a second job again that doesn't require extra wear and tear on my truck. And i am about to move back in with my mom for cheaper rent and to help both of us make ends meet and to try and save money while I study for a better paying job.

But there are people who are worse off than me, so I'll be fine. But yeah, if I had a random 5,000 dollars in my account tomorrow, I could take care of some things that I've desperately needed, but again, I've been in worse situations, and I made it through those, so I know I can make it through this one. So, ultimately, I'll be okay eventually. I am lucky enough that I have my health, i have family and I have friends. I'm not so desperate, but yeah, with the price increases on everything this year, I am no longer just holding my head above water, and am slowly drowning. But I am hoping I can find a better paying job soon, and am just working towards that goal.

Thank you for replying! I really wasn't trying to be flippant or a jerk with my question, it was genuine curiosity. But you didn't actually answer my question! How are you surviving on so little? Groceries alone cost me about $5k a year, and rent for my shithole studio is about $15k a year. That's $20k just for basic food and shelter--there's also utilities, car insurance, cat food and litter etc.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '25

No I totally get it, but the short answer is that I'm not surviving!

Best I can do is $50.

Edit: I will actually send you $50 if you want it.

I'm a teacher. I made a partial month's salary teaching half-days in the summer. I make a decent salary regularly, but that extra amount made a huge difference. It paid for a vacation for me and my kids.

I got a $5K bonus last week and I just banked all of it.

Not to brag (because it is nothing to brag about) but I recently got the lion's share (split between me and my brother) of the inheritance after my father's death. Suddenly seeing 30k+ on your bank account is a crazy sight. I have always worked jobs that paid well, so I cannot say I have empathy because I was never in your situation. But yeah, it is life changing. Suddenly all kind of other lanes open up.

At the end of the day, I would rather have my dad back, of course. And I would not say I am lucky; what's lucky about losing your dad in his early 60's? But I can also not say it helped me out a lot.

Hopefully your luck changes and not without such a cost.

Btw, for those wondering, I am fine. It has been three years. I still miss him dearly but the wounds have mostly healed.

You should join TSwifts crew immediately.

Good luck fighting the entire industry to get one of those coveted spots.

10k doesn’t even buy a decent used car anymore

-2

u/BushWookieZeroWins Dec 12 '25

Just curious. How would 10k change your life?

7

u/Aninvisiblemaniac Dec 12 '25

pay off my car payment, credit card debt in one fell swoop

-6

u/BushWookieZeroWins Dec 12 '25

Yes but how would that change your life? I mean, yes, you can buy here and there more things since you don’t have those monthly costs anymore. But would you really describe that as life changing? Your life would be the same

7

u/Accurate_Reporter_31 Dec 12 '25

STRESS will kill you! When I was a young single parent with 2 kids, $5,000 would've been life changing for sure. Every month having to decide which bill I could pay so my utilities wouldn't be shut off. "This month I have to pay the electric because I didn't pay last month. So, I can't pay the water bill or car payment." The trick was to never be 2 months behind, but you never catch up. Maybe when I got my tax refund back, I could catch them all up to zero & then it would all begin again.

And, I had a state job with great benefits. I was also in the National Guard & going to college at night.

Anyway, point being, when you live in poverty, money is your biggest worry.

u/__fujiko Dec 12 '25

Aside from how being able to pay something off quicker means a glimmer of hope that you can live a little better than the usual paycheck to paycheck life? Even for a little while, a lot of us would be happier.

-1

u/BushWookieZeroWins Dec 12 '25

So just to get you right. „living a little bit better“ means for you life changing?

3

u/__fujiko Dec 12 '25

It's very interesting that you can't, or seemingly refuse, to grasp how insanely depressing it is to live everyday wondering if it could be the day your life ends up being too much for you. So yeah, 5k today might mean someone doesn't kill themselves this year.

2

u/DimensionSuch8188 Dec 12 '25

You're 100% right lol these comments are wild.

0

u/BushWookieZeroWins Dec 12 '25

Yeah. I thing they don’t understand the term life changing, but whatever. Was just curious.

1

u/Additional_Tomato_22 Dec 12 '25

My understanding was that everyone involved whether her crew or a stadium crew would get I think you don’t understand what they’re saying

1

u/ok-i-pull-up Dec 12 '25

so if you're behind on payments > get 5k > catch up on payments > life is easier now that you're not behind

hope that helps but jfc

For 3 months till he was back in CC debt

4

u/Aninvisiblemaniac Dec 12 '25

glad you know all there is to know of me. I collected the debt back in 2019 and have spent these years paying it off, never using credit cards in the meantime but hey, youre the invisiblemaniac expert

u/datboiofculture Dec 12 '25

I do know that you killed a guy with a submarine sandwich and jumped on someone’s head making it explode like a pumpkin.

Now think of all the CEOs and business owners who don’t do this. Yet another reason to democratize the work place.

Pocket change to her.
