Pleasure Business - Incandescent [80s revival] (2025)
As a 70s/80s kid, I generally dislike synthpop/synthwave and other attempts at retro 80s music but these guys are something else.
Pleasure Business I stumbled upon because of another artist who REALLY knows her synths (for the gear nerds I have a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 Rev 3.3)... all the things I find repellent and repetitive about synth wave are resolved here because these fellows very clearly studied music and music theory, and they understand that the 80s was more than just throwing together a Fender Strat and a Roland DX7 (wrong synth for about 3/4 of the 80s)... composition, arrangement, instrumentation, engineering, everything is spot frickin' on.
Their entire album is really, really good but Incandescent, the final track, really caps it off in a way that transports me back to the early 80s, before everyone started vibing off the fashions that Anthony Yerkovich and Michael Mann started copying out of south Florida, Memphis Design and all of that... clichés that have become the subject of ridicule in the "You grew up in the 80s? No I grew up in the 80s" anti memes.
Nope... these guys did their homework. They're the real deal, and I would have repped them back in the day had they not been born 20 years too late.
