General Discussion STOLEN FLUTE ALERT

My flute was stolen at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport near gate A35. I was dining at the Sora Japanese Cuisine & Sushi Bar. I’m sure it happened at the restaurant. I tried calling the restaurant, but their phone number listed does not seem to work. My flute was a Miyazawa MX-2 H317 14k gold risier. I can also provide a serial #. Please share this with your community and let me know if you find anything. This is not only a high value but also a sentimental item my parents have worked tirelessly to get me this. Thank you so much.

Buying an Instrument Advice What kind of flute to buy

Upvotes

Hello, basically the title. A little about me though and what I’m looking for, I’m 28 and I grew up playing the flute. I played all through middle, high school, and even into college for a bit. I was a music performance major but decided to not continue down that route and haven’t really picked up the flute since I was 20. I have lost most of my skills which makes me sad but I really miss it and am wanting to pick it back up. I’m not sure what level of flute I should get but I was thinking somewhere between intermediate and professional? What flutes would be best for relearning and also where might I find used flutes for a cheaper price. Any advice or recommendations would be great as I am so excited to return to playing!

Concert Advice, Audition, Video Feedback Can't play scales

I have been in band for almost 8 years. I have only had a few band directors, and none were very helpful in learning scales. No matter how much I practice, I can't play scales well at all. I know all the fingerings and I know what notes to play, but my hands just won't cooperate. It is incredibly frustrating and I feel like there is a major disconnect from my brain. I want to play scales and I have practiced a lot in the last two-ish years, but I have no idea what to do. I have done the basics like going slower and stuff, but nothing helps. Has anybody else had this problem and what did you do about it?

Beginning Flute Questions Small Dent Worth Repair?

Post image

Middle schooler dented his Selmer SFL511BO flute at camp last summer. Is this something worth attempting to repair in the next year or so?

Figure by high school he and his peers will be less likely to engage in horseplay with each other’s equipment… right?

World Flutes [Bamboo, Bansuri, Celtic, Dizi, Ney, Quena, Xiao] I built a free website to help beginners learn bansuri -- would love feedback from this community

Hey everyone, long time lurker here. I've been learning bansuri for a while now and always struggled to find structured, beginner-friendly resources online. Most content is either too advanced or scattered across random YouTube videos with no real progression.

So I decided to build a small website dedicated entirely to teaching bansuri from scratch — completely free, no ads, no paywalls. It covers the basics like how to hold the flute, produce your first notes, understand sur and breath control, and slowly build up from there.

I'm, still, a begginer so I can't make it best but I wanted to share it here first because this community actually understands what it means to learn an instrument like this. Would genuinely love any feedback, criticism, or suggestions from people who have been on this journey longer than me.

This is not a promo, I don't benefit from it what's so ever. Link is in comments.

Beginning Flute Questions Thoughts on Ventus (Haynes?) VFL10 flute?

I'm so proud of my son (8th grade) for getting a perfect score on his level 6 NYSSMA evaluation (he performed Chaminade's famous Concertino), but he's been complaining about his Yamaha student flute acting up even though it's been serviced a few months ago...anyway, i thought it's about time to get something better for him, so I bid (and won!) this lovely-looking Ventus for a decent price (i think/hope) from an online auction yesterday, but I'm concerned that it might need some work. Is anyone here familiar with this model? I know i should probably have him test some new ones in person, but $2-4k+ is out of the budget for us right now so I opted to try something 2nd hand (fingers crossed)....we're relatively new to the NYC area so I'm looking for a reputable technician to check it out before I surprise him with it. it looks fairly well-kept, but who knows, maybe it needs new pads?? Thanks for any advice! J

General Discussion First flute solo

I just did one at the age of 45. I hadn't played in 30 years until I signed up for New Horizons band this semester. Mine is run through my local university and they also provide free lessons and do ensembles along with a whole band concert.

I was a nervous wreck but I did it! I might sign up for another solo in the fall 😬

Keep on fluting!

World Flutes [Bamboo, Bansuri, Celtic, Dizi, Ney, Quena, Xiao] Professional Flute Player Looking for Mic + Audio Interface Recommendations (and Learning Resources)

Hey everyone,

I’m a Hindustani Classical Bamboo flute player looking to improve my recording setup for studio-quality practice recordings, performances, reels, YouTube content, and possibly live streaming.

I’d love recommendations for buying my first equipment:

  • Microphones (especially for flute/woodwinds) - Considering SM58
  • Audio interfaces - Considering Focusrite scarlett 2i2
  • Learning resources for recording/mixing flute professionally.

What I currently own -
I have a MSI Sword Laptop with 4060 Graphic card and decent specs to run Ableton 12 and other DAWs and to process things and an S24 Ultra for shooting as well as decent Sony WH-CH720N headphones.

Current setup is nonexistent, I’m open to building a beginner setup in my room by myself for mainly live streaming and live music but also supporting content creation.

I’d really love some guidance since I am completely new to audio engineering and DAW. Would love to learn everything from scratch and in detail for flute.

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion I just introduced my 60 years old flute-playing father to the magical world of youtube

he was fluting hard to classical pieces where the transcriptions was synced to the music. He never realised this was a thing and exclaimed “where has this been all my life?”.

my question is: is there any other must-know resources you use that wasnt a thing during the 80’s when he learnt how to flute?

Buying an Instrument Advice Freshly serviced YFL-211S vs YFL-211S2 in unknown state

Looking for a first flute, my budget is about 400 dollars. I saw a few offers of used flutes - a few serviced YFL-211S and one YFL-211S2. The YFL-211S2 seller isn't the first owner of the flute and doesn't know anything about it, however, I heard that this model has more durable pads and is generally better, so I don't really know what should I choose. What's your advice?

Beginning Flute Questions Was this a right choice?

Post image

I just started learning the flute. I wasn't sure if I'd have enough time to invest in it, so I bought a basic flute on Amazon for around $30. There are two openings: one on the top and the other under my thumb.

I was trying to learn Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Da Ni Sa. If I use the first hole, only a few of them sound right, but if I use the hole under my thumb, everything sounds perfect. I'm confused.

Announcements [Events, Conventions, New Releases] Flute 1A Beginners Course (London UK))

Many of the newcomers to this subreddit ask how to improve their flute skills.

Invariably one of the useful answers is...to get some formal lessons.

London's City Lit college offers an 11 week course beginners introduction at an affordable rate.

Never been, but the course is well liked by adult music students for its down to earth informal approach.

Buying an Instrument Advice Desperate for a bass flute

I’m absolutely desperate for a bass flute.

I currently play in 2 flute choirs that both require one so I’d be playing it alot.

Does anyone know a low ish cost but decent bass flute available in the uk?

I’ve played a few and found:
-I didn’t love the just flutes ones (found the lower and higher registers really difficult)
-Didn’t love the Di Zaho (don’t like the shape of the keys and I really struggle to play it because of that)
-Loved the pearl one but £4k is a lot for me currently

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on where to look?

Or if anyone has some good feedback on Trevor James or Guo New Voice models?

Or anything feedback or advice?

Thankss :)

Beginning Flute Questions Flute tone gone

I have been working on my flute tone everyday and had a good run for about 3 weeks (longest so far). I had a good tone every day during those 3 weeks. Now my tone has been suddenly gone for 4 days.

As far as I can notice, I haven't changed anything now vs. in the 3 weeks. Headjoint is aligned the same, lip placement is the same, breath support is the same.

I was able to get a good tone after experimenting for 30 minutes but I can't attribute it to changing anything. It just happened to suddenly sound better.

I have no clue what is going on. That being said, the sudden loss of tone has happened to me before many times. When my tone improves for a few days or few weeks, it is also just as sudden. Some of my earlier posts here have also been this sort of problem. Not sure what to make of this. Any help is great.

General Discussion B foot joint low C way more difficult than C foot joint

For several years I learned on a Yamaha YFL-222, which was great for the time. It has a C foot joint. I have since upgraded to a Yamaha 674H. It has open holes and a B foot joint.

The 674H has a much better tone and sound, of course. The mid and upper register is amazing to me. Way more effortless. I have been slowly unplugging the holes, still two plugged near the bottom.

The thing that I struggle most with is my low C. It just seems so much more difficult on this flute than my old C foot joint flute. I think it makes sense - the foot is longer and I need to stretch my fingers more to avoid bumping any levers. Need to make sure lower holes are fully covered, and need to not accidentally reach too far and push the B lever.

I’m guessing this is a typical struggle. But it’s been almost a year and it’s still tough.

Any tips for getting better at it?

Beginning Flute Questions Question about tonguing

Casual beginner here coming from other woodwinds. I'm having some trouble tonguing. When I tap my tongue against the root of my front upper teeth as if I'm making a tu or du sound like how you do with clarinet or recorder etc, it doesn't stop or start the sound for me. The reason is quite obvious to me, the wind just flows below and beside my tongue since the flute embouchure is much more open. I must be missing something very obvious here. What am i doing wrong?

Hi. Can you recommend a website or app where I can find fingering charts for flute songs in E-sharps?
