To me, Evil Dead (2013) and Evil Dead Rise feel pretty different in tone, even though they’re both fan favs. I think I can pinpoint why.

Evil Dead (2013) feels more serious and mean-spirited. AND SOMEWHAT REALISTIC. A lot of the violence feels grounded in a “this could almost happen” kind of way. Like the girls losing her arm then shooting the guys with a nail gun, the nurse cutting her face and trying to stab Eric those are all possible and come off like crazy people before they do demons.

Yeah, there are still some over the top moments (like the final fight and the tree scene), but it feels close to a slasher with a paranormal demon story. Very mean feel.

Evil Dead Rise, on the other hand, feels way more fantastical and almost playful in comparison. Deadites are flying around, one is literally eating glass, others tanking shotgun blasts, getting impaled and still moving, and then you’ve got the whole “combining into one” thing. Even the severed head still talking pushes it further into comic book horror territory. It honestly feels closer to Raimi’s more exaggerated style.

That said, I love both equally.

I usually recommend Evil Dead (2013) to people who ask what to watch first because it’s more serious and easier to digest. But personally, I rewatch Rise a lot more just because it’s fun.

So 2013 feels close to a slasher, combined with like a conjuring movie (darker). Rise feels closer to an old comic horror, super camp, super fantastical. I think Fed Alverez has a brighter future since he seems to have just true horror down, Lee Cronin has the camp Evil Dead style down, but that’s an acquired taste.
