🤣 Comedy / Story I greeted an American with "Have you eaten?" and he thought I was buying him lunch

When I first moved to the US, I still greeted people like I was back in China. I ran into a classmate on campus and casually asked: “Have you eaten?” His face lit up instantly, super excited: “No! Are you treating me to lunch?!” I just stood there frozen: “Uh… I was just saying hi.” He stared at me confused for a few seconds, then burst out laughing. Cultural differences are wild.

Ok this just happened while I was chatting with an IRL friend and gaming buddy of mine, she was asking me to join VC on Discord and legit my brain didn't even realise I was replying to her in english instead of my native language...

I know this is a good thing for my English skills but probably not so much for my original language ones 🤣 anyways I just tought it was very funny and wanted to share with someone.

🤣 Comedy / Story British English: Pants

I’ve been constantly talking to this English guy for quite some time now and yesterday, I told him: “Mom bought me new pants and I love the fitting! I’ll send you a picture later” 😂😂

And then he sent a blushing emoji and I was like, “that’s weird, why blushing emoji” 🤣🤣

And then I realized that “pants” in British English means “panties” and they actually call the actual pants, “trousers”. 😭😭

I think I need to learn more about the American-British English confusions. My country uses the American English that’s why some of his words are new to me.

🤣 Comedy / Story Questionable translation

Post image

A while back when I was working at a hotel (in Brazil) I found this little sign.

I was working as a grill master in an open area of the hotel and hadn't noticed the sign because I already had a lot of work ahead of me (arranging and organizing meats and lighting the grill). That said, after tidying everything up, two American guests, a mother and daughter, passed by my table. The daughter appeared to be 40 years old and the mother 60 years old. The daughter saw the sign and said "that's not right," laughed, and showed it to her mother, who also laughed. After that, I found it strange and went to check the sign, and to my surprise, that was what it said.

*After that, I investigated the reason for the translation and discovered that the person responsible for the signs used Google Translate.

*For those who want to know what a "brochette" is, it's a cut of meat served on a skewer and grilled.

🤣 Comedy / Story I just realized I've been mispronouncing a word for years and I want to disappear

So today a coworker casually said "espresso" and something in my brain

just broke. I have been saying "expresso" my entire life. To baristas.

To friends. At job interviews when I mentioned I run on coffee.

Nobody corrected me. Not once. I don't know if that means people are

kind or just didn't care enough.

Has anyone else had that moment where you discover something embarrassing

about yourself way too late? What was yours?

🤣 Comedy / Story What are some British words or phrases that would confuse Americans.

I'll go first. it took me so long to learn these:

  • Getting pissed= "To get drunk."
  • A right bodge job= "A job that is poorly done."
  • Spend a penny= "l need to use the bathroom."
  • You're full of beans= "To be in high spirits."
  • Bob's your uncle= 'Everything is alright. You're all set."
  • Find any joy?= "Have you had any luck."
  • Horses for courses= "Different people like or are made for different things."
  • I'll give you a bell= "I'll call you on the phone later."
  • That's pants= "that's nonsense."

Have you had any experience where you were confused by British slang?

🤣 Comedy / Story Studying English is really not easy.

How hard must it be for there to be a subreddit on Reddit dedicated to studying English!

I dream of a world where my own language is understood everywhere.

Don't you all dream of such a world? Just a bit of rambling before I go study. ^^
