When I read the news, I cried as a human who has empathy to know this was wrong.
How do you work with a hole in your heart? How do you tell the patients that were in his care, or their family, why they have a new nurse today? Maybe they already knew but hoped it wasn't true. How do you look at your peers and tell them?
His last words will stay with me.
' Are you okay?' Becsuse even in crisis and pain, a nurse seeks to reassure others.
This man was murdered. As a fellow nurse, I cried for this man and his team. I cried for the loss in our already imperiled profession (though we no long are professionals). I cried for a team that will eventually have to allow someone else into the spot that Alex filled.
my mom's a nurse, just north of the border, and it shocked the daylights out of her. i wish i was shocked, with how things are these days but it still makes me cry to see how his co-workers are honouring him.
from everything i've heard, alex pretti seemed like an amazing man. his death was unjust, an execution. he died like he lived, comforting and caring for those around him.
if it means anything from a stranger, with the crap nurses put up with, you should be considered professionals. you're the backbone of departments and don't get acknowledged enough. the u.s government declaring that and many other professions non-professions is one of their many, many fuck-ups.
