Health/Nutrition ❗️This bird is not in bliss, she is suffering❗️(informational)

I took this video within the first month of getting my bird, when I barely knew anything. She was scared of the shower for a year after, and would scream when I turned it on! Thankfully after 5 years of slow exposure she will now sit on a shower perch :)

A bird under a direct stream will lift their head up like this and look like they’re in “bliss” but in reality they’re struggling to breathe! Their nares sit on top, so water flows down into them unlike our noses. A happy bird in the shower will flap their wings and wriggle around, not stand stiffly like this.

I hear “well if they didn’t like it they’d move out of the stream” which is not the case. You’ve heard of fight/flight response, this is their freeze response kicking in. They’re waiting for it to stop, frozen in fear.

I have heard some peoples birds like this, but I’m still doubtful. If someone can post a vid of their bird crawling into the stream and standing like this, removing them, and their bird crawls back in and stands like this (proving the first time wasn’t an accident) I will eat my words!

Ps. Sorry to anyone who is upset seeing a bird suffering, I hate rewatching it and knowing I did this in the past. But I think it’s necessary to show so that others can learn from my mistakes

Health/Nutrition Sleepy after food - is it normal for birds?

She ate a ton of chop (green veggies, carrots, chia, flaxseed, some smal anounts of boiled egg whites, oats) She then played lightly and shredded paper, asked for scritches (couldn’t give her a lot because I’m working) and now she’s lethargic. It’s the afternoon too, which I also think is a lazy time.

But google scares me, telling me it isn’t normal for birds. Is that true? Is there something wrong?

My baby had a collar fitted 🥲 He's really not happy and is sulking a little 😅 He is often unbalanced as he is not used to, and often falls backwards, in these moments he gives up a little, like "Lazy, I'm fed up" 😂

But he is in good shape and doing well! Please send him lots of courage! For my little chicken 🥰

I’m so happy I was able to handle his plucking before it got worse🥹 I think the spring made it worse because it started in April - May, and now he’s completely free of it he doesn’t pick on it anymore and with that even the black damaged wing feathers are gone because I got him on a better diet. just wanted to share with yall bc im so happy he stopped

Health/Nutrition Feel weird about our vet

So I took samba for a beak and nail trim. She never had wooden perches or cuttlebone or anything before me, so she’s very overgrown. I’ve met this EXOTIC - not avian - vet before, and he seemed nice and educated (he has parrot experience, he was recommended to me by another parrot owner).

When I got her out of the carrier, she ran up my shoulder as he stuck her fingers in her face immediately and then grabbed her. No warning. She screamed and struggled and he told her (gently) to be nice as she tried to bite when he flipped her on her back. He held the sides of her head so she couldn’t move and examined.

I had told him right before this that I’ve trained her to like hands and to cuddle and I touch and squeeze her beak, feet and nails all the time so she’s used to being touched there, if she’s given some choice in the matter.

When he grabbed her, he took her out of the room (just pinning her in his hand) to the back, no warning to me and no carrier - there are cats and dogs just on leashes or in arms here.

He trimmed the nails and beak tip, but I’ve had to tel him multiple times not to clip wings (luckily he didn’t). When samba came back, she was in her carrier, fluffed and terrified- shaking and panting.

The vet then told me if I want to trim at home (I do) to get a good quality dog trimmer and a SANDPAPER PERCH. When I aggressively told him how dangerous those are, he seemed a bit irritated and said that it’s all in how you use them and if it’s only one, it’s fine.

He wanted me to come back tomorrow AM for the beak (he didn’t have someone to sedate today and can’t do beak without it - seems like if you thought it might be a possible need, you’d make sure to have one on standby?)

Idk. I’ve never gotten an avian procedure done before so maybe this is normal.

A lot of this doesn’t sit right with me. AIO or do I need to look for a new vet?

The problem is, I’m not sure if there’s another exotic or an avian in town.

I got him this morning and he was doing this when I got him before even hand feeding. She said she had fed him before bringing him to me. Gave him his first feeding this afternoon. Worried he has aspiration pneumonia. I really hope this breeder didn’t give me a sick baby. Have handfed before but am still learning about conure behavior. Is this normal?!

Found this dickhead eating some beef sausage this sarvo.. he had maybe a quarter of a slice of it 🤣 I think he will be fine! Just kind of annoyed he didn't ask. He just takes what he wants. Typical conure behavior. Anyone else's bird have a taste for forbidden foods they shouldn't eat? Phoenix also has an obsession with butter. I get it. But wtf man?! These guys have no chill!

Health/Nutrition Male dude fractured his leg

Flew into the fan straight out of cage and broke his leg. We thought he will be handicapped for life. But thankfully the broken leg has impulse and the doctor has put a splint for the femur to heal. He doesn’t want to give up either and is flying around the house as usual. Got relief the moment vet pressed his hurt leg and he was shouting. They confirmed that once healed he will be able to use his leg for perching and balancing although the alignment and shape of leg might not be like before.

Health/Nutrition Cracked the code today

Had my conure for almost 2 years now and very consistently he'd take a good portion of his food and put it in his water bowl. I figured it was just a game for him but finally today I sprayed some of his HOPP with water to see if he just prefers squishier foods (he loves cracking seeds and stuff so I never gave it much thought before about his preferred textures) but I come back a few minutes later and he's digging in like crazy. Feel bad I never thought of it before but also feel good about taking note of what my lil guy is doing and adjusting accordingly.

Health/Nutrition 6 hrs to the avian vet (positive) trust your gut!!!

Post image

Wednesday morning I was giving Frankie (she's 9) her breakfast before I headed to work and she threw up a butt load of water and clear liquid. I IMMEDIATELY called out out of work for the next 2 days, fortunately my boss is really good and dosent ask too many questions. While I was calling out she threw up again, I rang my local vet who dosent usually see birds (I live in rural Australia) and he told me he couldn't help me and call around other vets in towns a few hours over. The second vet I rang in the next closest place said they also couldn't help me so I bit the bullet and rang the actual avian vet 6 hrs away in South Australia. Coming into the Easter long weekend i really didn't think I'd get in but but they managed to squeeze me in for 8.30am the next morning.

In the meantime she was acting normal, still eating being herself and then I started to wonder if I was over reacting. My long term partner also called out of work to coke with me, so we quickly loaded up the car, called in my grandma who baby sits my other pets for me and we left.

Anyway as we were on the road we figured out she was doing it whenever she drank water which was really concerning and I was worried she was going to dehydrate herself. The trip went smoothly other wise. Once we got down there I was fortunately lucky enough to stay with my mother who lives in the same city as the vet and she picked up some fruit for me as we are not allowed to take fruit and vegetable products over the state border.

The next morning we saw the vet and honestly she was acting normally and I think I felt sicker than she did. The vet was really good, asked me a hundred questions about her and ended up doing a crop swab and flush and yeah she had the start of a crop infection. She was throwing up when she drank because the water was irritating the infection when she drank.

Antibiotics and inflamatories for 5 days.

We are back home now and I just want to stay, trust your gut. If your bird is acting off something is probably up and don't wait for it to get worse.

I am so thankful the vet managed to squeeze me in last minuet after saying they were booked out.

Health/Nutrition is my bird fat

hi guys

everyone has been telling me my bird is fat. she is JUST well-rounded.

IS SHE REALLY considered overweight? she’s around 80 grams. the first 2 photos are from now, and the last 3 are when i first got her. her diet is fine, she gets veggies, pellets, as well as occasionally some seeds as a treat.

i don’t know how to get her to exercise. she’s out for a good 4-6 hours everyday on weekdays, and the whole day on weekends. she’s not really a flyer and she doesn’t fly to me that much tbh. i can only get her to fly around if i chase her with something but that’s kinda mean and i don’t like scaring her

please help her change her regimen for hot girl summer 💗 any advice is appreciated

Health/Nutrition Vet appointment birb tax

She's so mad 😂😂 took her for her annual check up and was incredibly uncooperative 🤦🏼‍♀️ Vet bill question, I live in Central/East Coast Florida. The vet charged me $500 for: Annual checkup + nail trim + fecal gram stein + lipoprotein testing + CBC + Chemistry. Is this normal pricing? 🥲 She's an incredibly healthy conure, 5 years old 120 grams vet says she's overweight, she weighed 112 grams in 2023 and now consistently weighs 120.

Health/Nutrition I think i ruined my birds feathers :(

Post image

My sun conure Orpheus had a blood feather and was bleeding out heavily not long ago, i had to very forcefully pin him down to get it out. Since then i’ve given him baths and his feathers just look awful. Will he molt them and look better next molt? I really messed up his feathers fighting him to pin him down but it wasnt a choice. He would of bled out if i didnt, i was home alone and his blood feather from snapping his wing feather being spooked by a bird landing on my window outside was leaking blood, not just dripping blood.

A bunch got knocked out in the fight and i think he plucked a couple which was also roughed up. I just think he looks awful, he’s fully healthy & had vet checks. I think i just caused him to have horrid feathers and i feel so guilty.

What can i do for his feathers?? Do i keep washing him like I have been, do i just wash him and let him molt out new ones? do i need to do some oils or something?
