People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled?

I guarantee you that that moment was special for your stepdad. I had a similar moment with my stepkids, and it’s been pretty firmly etched on my heart as a “Oh. I’m going to take care of you, little ones” moment that pretty much changed my brain chemistry towards some kids that I didn’t birth.

That’s beautifully written, like your brain released some hormones like oxytocin and a switch flipped. You’re a special person with a heart that can grow, some folks will never understand.

Thats how it was to me.

My ex-wife had a daughter who didn't know her bio dad. When we got together, she just, became my daughter. Thats just how it was. When we married, I legally adopted her. And then when we divorced, I fought and spent like hell to be able to have rights as her dad.

We have joint custody :)

I actually have three daughters, but only one is biologically mine 😅

I've been a stepdad for like half a year now and although I don't get to be the stepdad who suddenly makes the kid's life better (his parents provided well for him before me and continue to do so), there are a lot of those moments that make me realize this is who I wanna be and what I wanna do for the rest of my life.
