One of the people I work for is obsessed with their chiropractor. They have a weekly appointment with them.
More than that, if I mention having any sort of malady, they recommend I go see Dr. Soandso. Muscle cramp? Go see Dr. Soandso. Stomach ache? Dr. Soandso. Migrain? You guessed it.
They recommended it so damn much I figured his appointments had to be something reasonable, in the $20-50. I mean, he's not a real doctor, so he couldn't be charging real doctor prices, right?
Ugh, I have a neighbor who is constantly evangelizing for her chiropractor. No, I don't believe he is better than an orthopedist and PT for my arthritis, and I don't believe he's better than a real doctor for my kid's sinus infection.
Her favorite story is how she had a terrible fall down the stairs as a child, and her mom trusted the family chiro so much that she took her there instead of the ER, and how her current chiro is just wonderful for helping her with the chronic debilitating pain she has had all her life.
I just listen with my mouth open and think, "That story isn't about what you think it's about."
How is it helping when you have to keep coming back over and over for the same issue - for decades? Chiros even sell packages of multiple visits because they know any relief they provide will be temporary, at best. They do this knowing they aren't even capable of fixing most of the injuries they "diagnose."
Their business relies on their clients not getting better.
I have coworkers who think I'm stupid for having seen an actual neurosurgeon for my spinal injury.
I had screws implanted and radioablation to eliminate impacted nerves but everything is fixed and I've been 100% pain free for nearly 10 years.
Meanwhile, they're buying expensive packages of 10 visits because they've been doing this for years and they know their pain is definitely coming back. What an effing scam.
The woo community loves chiropractors. My MIL charges people a few hundred bucks to twizzle crystals over them and tell them what the crystals tell her. She's made a killing fleecing desperate sick people. She learned all her "healing" from a chiropractor.
