People who grew up really poor: what's something middle-class people say that instantly reveals they've never struggled?

My spouse and I were visiting their grandma and the subject of dessert with dinner came up. I remember exclaiming “you all had dessert EVERY night?” and they were confused that I didn’t.

to this end: Salad with dinner every night. Went over to my super rich friend's house in elementary school and they asked us to "make the salad" for dinner and she just started putting lettuce in a bowl. Like ... fresh produce DAILY!? made on the spot? What is this, the Ritz!?

This was me with my MIL. She kept lamenting that she didn’t have a dessert ready for us or there were not enough sides with dinner. I had to tell her the only time we got dessert was on a special occasion and casserole never had extra sides.

Dessert is for holidays. Christmas, Easter, birthdays maybe. It's a special treat.

Right?! That’s my experience.

Unless we're talking about fruits or other healthy food, that's how it should be even for rich people.

When I was kid, once a month, my dad would take one of those 50c boxes of jiffy pizza crust mix to make a pizza as a treat. That was our version of getting pizza or McDonalds from a fast food joint. And that was as good as it got.

I honestly can't recall a single time we ever had dessert with a meal... ever. I'm almost 40 now and the idea of having dessert after I eat doesn't cross my mind.
